A haven for lovers of books and history, The Lit & Phil is a magnificent library that plays an important role in both Newcastle's past and present.
Opened in 1825, The Lit & Phil is based in a gorgeous neoclassical building complete with a main reading room skylit by three enormous dome lanterns set into its roof. It was a hub for pioneers, inventors and visionaries back in the 19th century and became home to the first public room ever lit by electric light when Joseph Swan exhibited his light bulb invention there in 1881.
Today, The Lit & Phil is the largest independent library in the UK outside of London and home to over 200,000 books and CDs - a collection that grows by some 1,000 new additions each year. From classic literature and classical music to history books, biographies and poetry, the library boasts a collection that includes every genre imaginable. Alongside its immense collection, The Lit & Phil also hosts regular events ranging from talks and tours to workshops and music gigs.
The building is free and open to all, but a variety of membership packages are available that come with a range of perks.
Conveniently located just a few yards from Central Station, it's the perfect place to head for a peaceful atmosphere to work, study, read or simply soak up The Lit & Phil's rich history.
