Making food for yourself is satisfying, relaxing and tasty but there’s a lot to be said for somebody doing the cooking for you, and often there’s no time for a sit-down meal: you might be rushing somewhere after work, refuelling on a night out or grabbing a bite on your way home. Whatever the circumstances, there’s a takeaway to suit every palate and budget in Newcastle, a city known for its vast range of take-out locations. We’ve gathered together some of the tastiest places to grab a bite in Newcastle and how to order a delivery if you want your food brought straight to your door.
Flame N Grill, Marlborough Crescent
You can find Flame N Grill just opposite Times Square on Marlborough Crescent, an old school takeaway that covers a range of options – kebabs, wraps, pizzas, chicken, burgers and the rest. It’s a no-frills place with big portions and keen prices that’s open till 2am (4am at the weekend) and delivery is available through Just Eat.
Image: Chilli Padi
Chilli Padi, Leazes Park Road
Chilli Padi has built up a strong reputation in recent years for its vibrant and original menu. Specialising in Malaysian cuisine, it serves up a tasty and very spicy combination of South Asian influences from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and beyond. Rice is a staple and Chilli Padi’s take on the variations of nasi lemak are delicious. There’s a host of fish and vegetarian options alongside the meat and plenty of dishes you won’t find on any other menu in the city. The restaurant is just a stone’s throw from St James’ Park and delivery is available through Uber Eats.
St Sushi, Westgate Road
St Sushi has been a popular Japanese restaurant for almost twenty years, with a reputation for authentic food lovingly prepared. It’s worth a visit for a sit-down meal but the takeaway option is definitely worth a try too – dozens of dishes from bento boxes and sushi sets to more substantial offerings like teriyaki salmon and grilled eel don buri. You can collect from the restaurant or use Just Eat for a delivery.
Image: My Delhi
My Delhi, Clayton Street
My Delhi has a great reputation as a restaurant to enjoy authentic North Indian food (thanks to chef Gauray Dayal’s childhood in India’s biggest city) but the takeaway part of the business is a sensation in its own right, recently winning Best Takeaway In the North East at the Just Eat Restaurant Awards. My Delhi specialises in small plates and street food so the options are far from your usual Indian fare but incredibly appealing, inspired by the stalls you’d find lining the roads in Delhi. You can click and collect your meal or use their delivery partners, Uber Eats or Deliveroo.
Yathai, Scotswood Road
Also specialising in a street food take on a popular cuisine, Yathai is a Thai takeaway joint that offers a short but very tempting menu featuring both traditional Thai dishes like massaman curry and sweetcorn cakes but also some curveballs – katsu curry and udon noodles included. You can collect from the Scotswood Road kitchen or get Just Eat to deliver.
Image: Shawermerz
Shawermerz, Nun Street
While Shawermerz does serve burgers, pizzas and the rest, it’s really all about proper Lebanese food – mezze, kebabs, grilled meat, salads, pastries and dips – and they do it all just right. Their meal deals are a great way of getting a range of Lebanese dishes to share, and you probably won’t find specialities like falafel or batata harrah prepared better in town. Delivery is through Feed Me Online.
German Doner Kebab, Newgate Street
Germany isn’t the first place you think of when you’re considering a kebab, but this large and highly regarded chain started in Berlin more than thirty years ago and is a firm favourite with lovers of the doner. You can dine in at their Newgate Street branch or grab a takeaway (they’re open till 11pm every day). The selection of kebabs and burgers is tempting and there are all sorts of bundles and boxes to make sharing easy. And delivery is easy through Uber Eats or Deliveroo.

COOP Chicken House, Collingwood Street
Sometimes a restaurant decides to concentrate on doing one thing really, REALLY well. Such is the case with COOP where it’s all about chicken - whole or half birds, wings, burgers, strippers and box combos, chicken galore. There’s a full supporting cast of sides and extras – from corn on the cob to slaw, a selection of drinks and desserts and even a dozen little chili sauce shots! You can collect from the Collingwood Street restaurant or use Uber Eats for delivery.
Little Asia, Stowell Street
Found in the heart of Chinatown, Little Asia is a great little place that specialise in Chinese hotpots – a central shared soup pot to which you add ingredients (meat, seafood, veg, noodles) to create the meal you want. The takeaway menu is pretty special too, offering a variation on their hotpots plus a wide range of fairly traditional Chinese dishes with a few surprises. You can collect till 10pm every day or use Just Eat, Uber Eats or Deliveroo.
Image: I Scream For Pizza
I Scream For Pizza, Quayside
You didn’t think we’d do a takeaway round-up and forget to include any pizza, did you? Newcastle is blessed with some excellent pizzerias, several of which are a far cry from your standard neighbourhood takeaway. I Scream For Pizza is definitely something special: their Brooklyn-style pies start at staples like the NY Cheese and head in some strange but wonderful directions – the Lamb Fender, with koftas on a spicy base or Truffle In Paradise, with mushrooms and caramelised fennel in a creamy truffle sauce. All that plus dips, ice creams and sundaes. You can click and collect or use Uber Eats.
Newcastle is absurdly blessed with takeaway options, from the humble kebab to the bento box, or an unusual pizza to Indian street food. This list barely scratches the surface but next time you’re too tired to do much from your sofa beyond reach for your phone, or you’re desperate for some carbs before you hit the next pub, these are some excellent suggestions to fill that takeaway-shaped hole in your belly.
