New Free Community Hub for Longevity and Wellbeing Opens in Newcastle's Grainger Market

Newcastle University’s School of Pharmacy and UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing, proudly announce the opening of Being Well Place, a dynamic new community hub in the heart of Newcastle's iconic Grainger Market.

Being Well Place offers a welcoming environment where visitors can engage with health and wellbeing resources, explore innovative technologies, and participate in hands-on activities designed to enhance quality of life. Located at Unit 86/101/102, opposite the Weigh House, this unique space will serve as a vital resource for the local community, promoting proactive approaches to healthy living and ageing.

Being Well Place will host the ‘Young@Heart clinic’ and a wide variety of wellness programmes, events, and workshops, where visitors will have access to expert advice on improving wellbeing, alongside opportunities to discover the latest advancements in caring technologies aimed at supporting health and longevity.

This space will also serve as the home of “Community Toolbox”, an initiative that provides people with the opportunity to borrow smart sensing technologies for free - exploring how data on our surroundings, ourselves, and even our pets can support our health, well-being, and daily lives.

Dr Jennine Jonczyk, Programme Lead of the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing’s regional programme, the Internet of Caring Things®, shared her excitement:

"We are thrilled to introduce Being Well Place to the Newcastle community, right here in the heart of Grainger Market. This space will foster conversations around staying well, promote healthy living practices, and introduce visitors to the latest in health-supporting technology. Our mission is to empower people to take control of their wellbeing, and we’re proud to contribute to the vibrant community that Grainger Market serves."

Professor Hamde Nazar at Newcastle University’s School of Pharmacy, commented:

“The School of Pharmacy is excited to support the health and wellbeing of our community through this innovative collaboration. Being Well Place provides an inclusive space where the public can gain access to valuable resources and insights into maintaining their health.

Our ‘Young@Heart’ clinic aims to provide people of the local area a convenient opportunity to discuss their health and wellbeing, receive a screening for cardiovascular risk and information about onward support services.”

The official opening event on 3rd of October will feature welcome remarks from representatives of the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing, and Newcastle University’s School of Pharmacy, followed by an interactive tour of the space and catering showcasing the ‘Tastes of Grainger Market’. Special guests and community leaders will be in attendance to mark the occasion.

Being Well Place is poised to become a cornerstone of wellness in Newcastle, offering something for everyone. Visitors are encouraged to stop by, participate in workshops, and explore the many ways this innovative hub can support their health and wellbeing.
