NEWCASTLE PUB LISTED IN 20 BEST GASTROPUBS IN BRITAIN

One of Newcastle’s most popular pubs have won further national recognition by being named among the 20 best gastropubs in Britain. The Broad Chare, on Newcastle’s historic Quayside, was among the list chosen by readers of The Times in association with Harden’s. The pub sits among very grand company - from Tom Kerridges’ two Michelin-starred Hand & Flowers in Marlow to Rick Stein’s countryside pub, The Cornish Arms, just outside of Padstow. The Broad Chare, part of Terry Laybourne’s highly successful 21 Hospitality Group, was described as an “operation that focuses on regional produce and traditional dishes done very well”. The Times’ readers described the pub’s menu as “hearty food cooked to gourmet standards". The Broad Chare is a creative partnership with Live Theatre and reference is made to the convenience of being able to have pre-theatre bar snacks like crispy pigs ears or deep-fried monkfish cheeks along with a carefully selected cask ale or the pub’s own Writer’s Block brewed exclusively by Wylam Brewery. This is the latest accolade for the Newcastle pub which last year received a Michelin Bib and was Newcastle’s first pub to be named in the Michelin Good Pub Guide. Chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne spoke of his delight at making the 20 Best gastropubs list: "It is a great surprise and pleasure for us to be listed among such great company. Being named one of the Top 20 gastropubs in Britain by Harden’s and the readers of The Times means we are not only recognised by food critics but also by our customers. “It’s also a tribute to the efforts of the team working in the pub along with the boldness of Live Theatre to embark on such a project with us more than two years ago.” Within the last 12months The Broad Chare has also been named one of the best 50 gastropubs in Britain by leading trade magazine the Publican’s Morning Advertiser.
  • One of Terry’s other restaurants, Café 21, also located on Newcastle’s Quayside, has just been listed among Top 10 restaurants in Yorkshire and the North East in the Sunday Times.
