Newcastle law firm Burnetts Solicitors LLP has appointed two new Equity Partners following a year of growth and investment after its relocation in March 2024 to brand new offices at Citygate.

Paul Brown who is a Serious Injury Partner for the firm and current President of Newcastle upon Tyne Law Society joined yesterday (1st April) as an Equity Partner, along with Nicola Nutley who is Burnetts’ Head of Newcastle, and Head of Banking and Property Finance.

Paul is Brain Injury Lead in the firm’s Serious Injury team. He joined Burnetts in 2018 and has over 20 years’ experience of supporting clients with personal injury claims following serious brain, amputation and spinal injuries. Paul is recognised by Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for his work supporting claimants, he is Chairman of brain injury charity Headway Wearside, and he is Secretary for the Northern Acquired Brain Injury Forum. He was recently elected as President of Newcastle Law Society.

Nicola joined the firm in 2021 and is a leading banking lawyer recognised by Chambers and Partners. Her main area of practice is advising in relation to finance and funding transactions and she has extensive experience across a range of sectors, including the funding of property acquisition and development transactions, the funding of corporate acquisitions and funding in the social housing, education and healthcare sectors. Nicola has also been Head of Newcastle for Burnetts since the firm’s £1m investment in its move to Citygate last year.

Nicola and Paul will now join Burnetts’ seven existing Equity Partners and become part owners in the firm. Burnetts is one of the largest law firms in the North and employs over 160 people across Newcastle and Cumbria.

Nicola said:

From the very first day that I joined Burnetts, I felt at home.  I was inspired by the collaborative and supportive ethos of the firm and all of the talented and dedicated people who work here.  I am delighted and honoured to be given the opportunity to join the equity partnership.  It is very exciting for me to be involved in helping to drive the business during a period of growth, especially by cementing Burnett’s presence in the Newcastle business community and by enhancing the nationwide reputation of the fantastic Banking and Property Finance Team which I lead.

Paul said:

I am very proud to become an Equity Partner here at Burnetts, where I have truly found my place. I am delighted to work at a firm where everyone is valued and there is a real feeling of togetherness. I look forward to working with my partners, colleagues and fantastic team to build upon our successes and grow the firm further across the North East and Cumbria.”

Nick Gutteridge, Burnetts’ Managing Partner said:

Paul and Nicola absolutely embody our values and their care for and dedication to our clients, is exceptional. We couldn’t ask for better examples of what we stand for here at Burnetts and so it’s with great pleasure that we welcome them as Equity Partners.”
