‘HARRIGAN’ RETURNS TO TYNESIDE CINEMA BY POPULAR DEMAND

‘HARRIGAN’, the hard-hitting police drama set in the 1970’s and starring Stephen Tompkinson in the title role, is set to return to the Tyneside Cinema on Sunday 8th December for a special screening and Q&A with director, Vince Woods, and writer, Arthur McKenzie.
When the film first played at the Tyneside Cinema at the end of September, to coincide with the film’s general cinema release, it was a total sell-out.
Filmed entirely on location in and around Tyneside, ‘HARRIGAN’ is based on the real-life experiences of Arthur McKenzie who was a highly commended policeman for 31 years and who has since gone on to become a best-selling author. The film is accompanied by a great retro soundtrack.
It's the winter of 1974 and power cuts and coal strikes cripple the country, which is reduced to a 3 day working week alongside Police 'centralisation'. Everything it seems is falling apart along with the community's only hope and protector, the nearly retired Detective Sergeant Barry Harrigan. Returning from a secondment in Hong Kong, he rejoins the police force and quickly realises that chaos is spreading like a disease. Taking matters into his own hands he faces a local gang led by the irrepressible Dunstan. When news reaches him that his friend and mentor has been beaten to death by his enemies, Harrigan's mission for justice becomes personal.
Commented Tyneside Cinema’s Programme Manager, Jonny Tull: “We’re thrilled to have ‘HARRIGAN’ returning to the cinema after such a successful first screening. Not only was the film hugely popular with the audience, but so were Arthur McKenzie’s many evocative stories of his life as a policeman ‘back in the day’. It’s an honour to be able to play a British film that was made locally but that has such great universal appeal. We’re very proud to be able to present the film once more and to welcome back Vince Woods and Arthur McKenzie to talk about the making of this special film.”
