The Woman in Black: Theatre Royal

Now celebrating its 24th year, The Woman in Black, continues to amaze and terrify audiences. The West-End favourite is one of the most exciting, gripping and successful theatre events ever performed, and is set to return to Newcastle Theatre Royal 20 25 May. As ghost stories go, Susan Hills The Woman in Black is considered by many to be one of the finest ever written. Stephen Mallatrats adaptation of this best-selling novel is now back on tour, delighting audiences in the form of a two-man stage play. Unanimously acclaimed, The Woman in Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. It gives audiences an evening of unremitting drama as they are transported into a frightening and ghostly world. Utterly terrifying, the story follows Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, who is summoned to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased elderly lady. While searching through papers at her house, located on eerie marshland, he comes face to face with a ghost, whose dreadful curse unfolds with the passing of time. As an old man, Kipps recounts his experiences to an actor in a desperate attempt to exorcise the fear that grips his soul. The play unfolds around the conversations of these two characters as they act out the solicitors experiences many years ago. In this production, Julian Forsyth will play Arthur. As Associate Director of Greenwich Studio Theatre in the mid-1990s, Julian won a Time Out Award and the London Fringe Best Director Award for his adaptations of plays from Denmark, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. He directs regularly at some of Londons leading theatre schools. Antony Eden (Kevin in BBCs Kevin and Co and Kevins Cousins) will take on the role of The Actor, charged with the job of telling the solicitors horrifying story. http://www.thewomaninblack.com/
