Winter 2024-25: 14 New Venues to Visit in Newcastle
Check out who’s new to the city with our round-up of recently opened bars, restaurants and stores
We’re quite confident that Newcastle is the place to be, at least if the smorgasbord of new businesses – both big brands and independents – that have recently set up shop in the city are anything to go by.
From pubs, cafes and restaurants to a footwear institution and even a gin, rum and whisky distillery, there are lots of great new places to visit and try in Newcastle – check them out below!
DOOD, Quayside
Brought to you by the same team behind Khai Khai and Dabbawal, DOOD (pictured above) is new to Newcastle’s dining scene and specializes in high-end Persian and Levantine cuisine. Located in a gorgeous Quayside spot overlooking the River Tyne, a feast of flavours awaits foodies with a mouthwatering menu of hot and cold mazah, kababs, khoresht and sharing feasts.
Deichmann, Northumberland Street
Europe’s biggest shoe retailer Deichmann set up shop on Northumberland Street in October and, as a family-owned business since 1913, it’s fair to say they know a thing or two about footwear. Quality footwear at an affordable price is their game and with a wide range of shoes for men, women and children – plus bags and accessories – you could kit out the whole family in one shopping trip.
The Mile Castle Hotel, Westgate Road & Grainger Street
‘Spoons pub The Mile Castle has been a Westgate Road mainstay for years but in 2024 it not only got a makeover, but gained a hotel too. Featuring 26 en suite rooms – double, king, twin and family – with all the modern amenities guests could need, it’s a gorgeous yet affordable city centre hotel option priced from just £60 per night.
EL&N at Fenwick, Northumberland Street
EL&N London arrived in Fenwick Newcastle’s Beauty Hall in late October and it’s a stunning new addition to the department store’s community of restaurants. Take a seat in its beautiful, botanical-inspired interior and enjoy everything from classic brunch dishes like French toast to lovely lunch eats like focaccia sandwiches – plus plenty of coffee and freshly baked pastries and cakes.
FRED’s at Fenwick, Northumberland Street
EL&N isn’t the only new arrival in Fenwick. Back in September, the department store debuted FRED’s – a modern twist on a classic tearoom inspired by founder Fred Fenwick’s love of French culture and the Belle Epoque period. Serving coffee, brunch, sandwiches, salads and afternoon tea, it’s perfect for a post-Fenwick shopping trip pick-me-up.
Bubbleology, Eldon Square
Speaking of shopping trips, if you’re out and about in Eldon Square and feeling parched there’s a brand-new Bubbleology kiosk waiting to quench your thirst. Serving a wide range of milk and fruit bubble teas, there’s a flavour to suit every palate – from coconut or caramel frappe to white peach or passionfruit.
World of Sweets, Grainger Market
Got a sweet tooth? Take a trip to Grainger Market and check out the recently opened World of Sweets. Run by the same team behind neighbouring bubble tea shop Manhua Cha, the stall sells a wide variety of sugary treats – from classic British sweets to international varieties including Japanese and American candies and drinks. It’s like being a kid in a candy shop… quite literally!
Suit Direct, Monument Mall
Fashion conscious fellers will want to put Suit Direct on their hitlist during their next shopping trip in Newcastle. From smart-casual staples through to wedding suits, the new Monument Mall store has tonnes of menswear designers all under one roof. And, with one-to-one personal styling appointments and the option to create your very own suit at Suit Direct’s Studio, shoppers are sure to leave looking their best.
The Canny Lad, Newgate Street
The sudden closure of infamous trebles bar Sinners over the summer was met with shock in Newcastle – many of us have, after all, had a notorious night or two there during our misspent youths. Luckily, Sinners has been reimagined as a fab Irish tavern going by the name of The Canny Lad and with live sport and weekday drink deals on pints and mixers all day long, it looks set to become a popular city centre pub.
Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser Cafe, Eldon Square
Hotel Chocolat’s velvetisers are all the rage but if you’re not lucky enough to have one at home, then fear not because Eldon Square recently welcomed a café dedicated to serving velvetiser drinks. Available hot, over ice or as a choc shake, they can be customised with different toppings and flavour combinations plus a choice of dairy milk or plant-based alternatives. The café also sells a select range of Hotel Chocolat products so you can shop for your faves too!
Moonshiner’s Institute, Blandford Street
Love a tipple or two? Then let us introduce you to Moonshiner’s Institute – a brand-new, micro-batch distillery that’s set up shop on Blandford Street. Owned by a husband-and-wife duo, the distillery crafts rum, whisky and gin and even offers make-your-own experiences during which spirit enthusiasts can craft their very own concoctions.
Coming Soon...
Rudy’s Pizza, Grey Street
Pizza fans across Newcastle rejoiced when news broke that Rudy’s Pizza is set to open its much-anticipated Grey Street branch on 21st December. The chain has taken the UK by storm and soon its delicious Neapolitan pizzas – fluffy, light and made fresh daily – will be available right here in the Toon. Personally, we can’t wait to get a pizza the Rudy’s action!
Cilantro, Side
Cilantro has been delighting diners in Hexham since 2019 with its tapas-inspired fusion of Indian and Latin American cuisine and we’re happy to report it’s setting up a new restaurant in heart of Newcastle’s Quayside very soon. Expect a marriage of mouthwatering flavours when it opens its doors on Side this winter with dishes like keema nachos and chicken tikka quesadilla.
Knoops, Grainger Street
Chocoholics are in for a treat because luxury hot chocolate brand Knoops is set to open its Newcastle café on 20th December in the Grainger Street spot formerly occupied by Island Poke and Pret A Manger. With 20 different chocolates varieties, a choice of milks and extra flavours including sea salt, cardamom, mint and lavender, it’s hot chocolate heaven. Iced drinks and milkshakes are available too – perfect when summer finally rolls around!
So many great businesses have set up shop over the past few months that you’ve no excuse not to go out and explore Newcastle’s newcomers! Let’s give them a big Geordie welcome, aye?
