Winter 2024-2025: 15 Big Music Moments in Newcastle

Newcastle’s music scene has always been vibrant, diverse and exciting and it’s no different this winter.

With a smorgasbord of great gigs that span the whole musical gamut – from punk, rock and metal to country, indie, dance and more – there’s something to suit every kind of music fan.

December

The festive season is the perfect excuse for having some fun and fans of bops from the 1980s will love letting their hair down when icons Boy George and Culture Club come to Utilita Arena this December. With hits from their first two albums ‘Kissing to Be Clever’ and ‘Colour by Numbers’ – plus support from Tony Hadley and Heaven 17 – it’s going to be an 80s throwback fest. (7th December 2024)

For the ultimate festive rock fest, look no further than Christmas Rocks at O2 City Hall. The three-day festival features a smorgasbord of rock and metal tribute acts – from Slipknowt and Green Days to Tyne Maiden and Bon Jovi Forever – and is perfect for keeping yourself entertained during Twixmas. (27th – 29th December 2024)

There’s more tribute act fun to be had at Wylam Brewery in December with Destination Elton. Boasting an 11-person crew featuring the finest session musicians and vocalists, it’s a celebration of the Rocket Man’s incredible career so expect to hear all of Elton John’s biggest and best loved hits, from bangers to ballads. (14th December 2024)

Groove your way on down to NX to catch one of the world’s biggest and best-loved dance acts when electronic duo Groove Armada come to town. With support from DJs Emily Nash, Ellie Scougall and Bimini, it’s going to be night full of beats and buzz. We see you baby! (7th December 2024)

NX really are pulling out all the stops in December because later in the month, Scottish singer-songwriter Dylan John Thomas is taking to the stage. Expect to hear hits from the indie rock sensation’s debut self-titled album like ‘Fear’, ‘Feel the Fire’ and ‘Jenna’. (18th December 2024)

January

Prepare to be blown away by a fusion of classical music and rock when the London Symphonic Rock Orchestra stop by Tyne Theatre & Opera House in the New Year. Made up of 12 classically trained musicians brought together by a mutual love of rock, the atmosphere is set to be electric as they perform reimagined classics from the likes of AC/DC, Iron Maiden, System of a Down and Rage Against the Machine. (18th January 2025)

Lovers of our local music scene won’t want to miss Kay Greyson at The Newgate Social. Hot on the tails of the release of her debut album ‘Chekhov’s Gun’, the Newcastle-based rapper is known for her genre-blending sound and fierce energy and is bound to be the next big thing. (31st January 2025)

If punk is more your kind of thing, then don’t miss out on Trash Boat at Riverside. The St. Albans-born quintet are bringing their punk rock/post-hardcore sound to the iconic Quayside venue in what promises to be one of their typically energetic shows. (27th January 2025)

January sure is bringing a multitude of musical genres to Newcastle and country fans will be pleased to hear that Brothers Osbourne are making a stop off at O2 City Hall on the North East leg of their ‘Might As Well Be Us’ world tour. Adventurous, progressive but still true to their country roots, this one is a must for lovers of country music. (23rd January)

An evening of pop punk is on the cards when Neck Deep come to NX. They’ll be playing tracks from their latest, self-titled album plus anthems from throughout their 12-year career that’ll have you bopping the night away. (28th January 2025)

February

In case you haven’t already heard the news, the MOBO Awards are coming to Newcastle for the very first time and it’s going to be the biggest music event of 2025! Happening at Utilita Arena, it’ll be a night to remember as the biggest and best talents in Black music and culture are celebrated right here in the Toon. (18th February 2025)

'Hold Back the River' singer-songwriter James Bay is set to wow audiences when he stops off at O2 City Hall on his new album tour ‘Changes All The Time’. Showcasing his evolution as a guitarist and pushing the boundaries of his sound, this is a must for lovers of his genre-blending music. (4th February 2025)

Inventors of ‘rockgrass’ – that’s a fusion of rock and bluegrass, for the uninitiated – Hayseed Dixie always put on a good show and their gig at Wylam Brewery will be no different. With a smorgasbord of stomping, banjo-driven covers of rock classics under their belt, this gig will convert you into a fan… if you’re not already, that is! (7th February 2025)

How does a night of infectious pop-punk courtesy of Circa Waves sound? The Liverpool-formed quartet are coming to NX to brighten up your February with a whole host of bops from their 10+ year career, plus tracks from their forthcoming new album ‘Death & Love Pt.1’. (21st February 2025)

There are more punk sounds up for the offering with Fat Dog at the Boiler Shop. Known for their mind-bending blend of electro-punk, rock’n’roll, techno and industrial, the band are touring their debut album ‘WOOF’ so book your tickets and see why everybody’s raving about them. (26th February 2025)

A whole season full of different sounds is coming to Newcastle this winter with something to suit everybody whether you’re into punk, rock, indie, country, dance or more. Get those tickets booked and we’ll see you down the front, aye?
