Where To Watch The Six Nations Rugby

Last updated:

If you’re a rugby fan – rugby union specifically – the Six Nations tournament is a BIG deal. The 2023 championship takes place over five weekends running until 18th March, and the fun kicks off on 4th February with a trio of explosive matches - Wales vs Ireland, England vs Scotland and France vs Italy.

Like any sport, one of the best ways to enjoy the Six Nations is in a bar or pub with your mates, watching all the matches on the biggest screen you can find. So, here are a few places in Newcastle city centre to catch all the action.

The Forth, Pink Lane

A big pub on a small, tucked away road, The Forth is going all in for the Six Nations. They’re going to be screening all the matches and are letting fans book their places in advance because it’s going to busy. You can even pre-order drinks and food (including some Six Nations deals) to make things even easier.

The Old George Inn, Old George Lane

Anybody who is a regular at The Old George Inn knows that its courtyard is banging, and even moreso during big sporting events like the Six Nations! Alongside their huge HD big screens, The Old George Inn is also offering a massive selection of craft beers, some tasty food and an excellent atmosphere in the city’s oldest and often liveliest pub. Again, booking spaces is highly recommended.

Shark Club, Gallowgate

In the shadow of St James’ Park, Shark Bar is a heady combination of sports bar and gastropub, so you can eat fabulously while absorbing the big screen thrills. They’ll be showing the England match on 4th February and it’s worth keeping an eye on the website to check which games they’ll be showing in future.

Bar 52, 55 Degrees North, Pilgrim Street

A buzzing bar in the 55 Degrees North complex, Bar 52 is a popular destination for sports fans wanting to add beer and burgers to all the excitement, and there’s a vast array of HD TVs to watch the games. They’re showing the England match tomorrow but stick around if you’re a football fan too and keep an eye on the website for future Six Nations fixtures.

The Akenside Traders, Dean Street

At the foot of Dean Street in the Quayside area, The Akenside is a big pub with a big reputation for fine food, great beer and a friendly atmosphere. They’ll be showing all the Six Nations matches and it makes sense to book a space because the Akenside is popular!

Habita, Northumbria University, Sandyford Road

Habita is the student bar for Northumbria Uni and the obvious destination if you’re a student there – there’s always something going on, the drinks and food are keenly priced and, most importantly, they’ll be showing every Six Nations match!

Filthy’s, Bigg Market

One of the Bigg Market’s most popular bars, Filthy’s has all the drinks and atmosphere you want (including some tempting student deals) and is showing every Six Nations match. Why not stick around for the live music afterwards?

The WonderBar, The Gate

A bierkeller in the heart of The Gate, The WonderBar has lots of attractions: drinks and food of course, but also live music, bingo and interactive darts, so there’s plenty to entertain you while you wait for the rugby to start. They’ll be showing all the Six Nations home games in a packed programme that also includes football and Newcastle rugby union club games.

The Mayfair Pub & Kitchen, Newgate Street

The Mayfair prides itself on offering gastropub food in a lively pub atmosphere – not only is there a range of menus and a fine selection of drinks, they even have a small retro games arcade so when the rugby isn’t on the screen, you can take on your mates at pinball or Street Fighter. They’ll be showing all the Six Nations games.

The Hancock, Hancock Street

On the northern edge of the city right by Exhibition Park, The Hancock is always a fine place for a few drinks and the addition of a feast of rugby makes it even more appealing. They’ll be showing all the home nation games and as well as plenty of drinks and food (with lots of different packages and offers) and there’s a pool table area to sink a few balls between games.

Rugby fans will be counting down towards the Six Nations kick-off and feeling hyped all the way to the final weekend as some of the finest national teams in rugby union face off. And with our suggestions of excellent places to watch the matches in Newcastle, you can immerse yourself in all the excitement.
