The Best Places to Stay in Newcastle: From Budget to Luxury

Our top picks of places to stay in Newcastle, whatever your budget

Last updated:

Newcastle is lucky enough to play host to loads of fantastic hotels, each with something unique to offer.

Whether you’re looking for an easy place to crash after a night out on the Toon, or something a little more luxurious, we’ve done the legwork and collated all the hotels you’ll want to check out in this handy article.

Get more bang for your buck

If you’re on a flying visit to town, or have a strict budget for your trip, then Carliol Square’s Kabannas is definitely worth a look. They offer shared rooms that can sleep up to fourteen guests, as well as double and twin rooms if you’re after a little more privacy. That’s not forgetting the on-site kitchen and bar too, which boasts affordable drinks and good food to kickstart your evening with after checking-in.

Likewise, Albatross Hotel on Grainger Street is complete with everything from twin rooms to twelve-bed dorms, free tea and toast, and a 10am checkout, all to help get your day started on the right note after a good night's sleep.

Meanwhile, in the heart of the city centre, there’s the Holiday Inn Express. Don’t misinterpret the “express” part of their name though, these budget rooms definitely don’t skimp out on perks! There’s free wi-fi, a 24-hour menu, and a complimentary breakfast buffet with a selection of hot and cold options to pick from.

Closer to entertainment hub The Gate and shopping paradise Eldon Square, there’s also Premier Inn. As if their super comfy beds wasn’t enough, their Newgate Street location is even lucky enough to have Bar + Block Steakhouse as their neighbouring partner restaurant. There’s a location down on the Quayside too, or there’s an easyHotel on Side that you might want to check out. As well as loads of different room types for wallet-friendly prices, they also offer luggage storage (for an extra couple of quid) so you can explore the Toon without hauling the suitcases around.

Royal Station Hotel Royal Station Hotel

If you’re travelling by train, it’s hard to find more convenient budget options than the Royal Station Hotel and the Hampton by Hilton. The former has seven room options to pick from, and also plays host to the Empire Bar and Restaurant, so some good grub is never too far away.

Just over the road, the Hampton by Hilton offers a fitness centre on-top of its brilliantly-priced rooms, so there’ll be no excuse to skip the work out… but you can always grab a free hot breakfast afterwards! We also want to give Leonardo Hotel a shoutout here too, since it’s just a short walk from the station and a stones throw from the likes of the Life Science Centre and Lane7 – making it ideal for keeping everyone entertained.

Fancy splashing out a little?

If you’ve found an extra couple quid down the sofa, or just fancy something different, there’s loads of mid-range hotels that prove you don’t have to break the budget for a comfortable time. Take Roomzzz Aparthotels for example. Their beautiful Grade II-listed building houses fourteen individually styled and spacious apartments, ideal for those long weekend stays.

Alternatively, Staybridge Suites are designed to be your home-away-from-home, with spacious living spaces, complimentary breakfast buffets, and mid-week evening socials. Flexing from productivity to relaxation has never felt easier! It’s a similar mission that you’ll find at Premier Suites Newcastle – home to twenty-eight serviced apartments, all spacious and equipped with everything you need to kick back and relax, or get to work.

But if you don’t need the full amenities experience, then add The Copthorne Hotel to your shortlist. Their Quayside location means that the vast majority of its rooms overlook the River Tyne, so you can make a coffee and cosy up by the window to watch the world go by. Giving them a run for their money looks-wise is The County Hotel – one of Newcastle’s original hotels dating back to 1874! Classical grandeur and contemporary elegance are perfectly balanced in each room here, whether you book into one of their eight room types, or splash out on a suite.

Meanwhile, Grey Street Hotel have put a contemporary spin on their building’s original Georgian features, resulting in some luxuriously comfortable and stylish interiors. Plus, if you want even more indulgence, their award-winning in-house beauty salon City Retreat is available for everything from manicures and lash treatments, to Dermalogica facials and Elemis body treatments.

Grey Street Hotel Grey Street Hotel

Prefer the hustle and bustle of the city centre? Take a gander at Motel One. This High Bridge hideout ensures you’re never far away from the action, boasting comedy club The Stand and chicken wing heaven Hen & Hops as just two of its neighbours. Plus, their luggage storage is free of charge, and check-out’s at midday, so you can enjoy a well-deserved lie-in at no extra cost.

Four Points Flex By Sheraton offers a similar city centre buzz without breaking the bank, as well as a range of rates and packages so you can pick the one that suits your stay best. Take in some history with a trip to the nearby Lit & Phil while you’re there, or grab a cocktail at The Vampire Rabbit – just around the corner – and watch the city come alive at night.

Or, for a wider choice of room types, take a look at the Maldron Hotel. Ranging from deluxe double rooms to executive rooms, they’ve got plenty of space to host you, your fellow Toon travellers… and all the luggage! Of course, there’s high-speed Wi-Fi in each room, and 24-hour room service available for any cheeky midnight cravings.

Following in their footsteps is Hotel Indigo, just a stones throw from Grainger Market. There’s car parking on-site available here, as well as a complimentary 24-hour fitness suite – but we really want to highlight their gorgeous balcony rooms overlooking the city, and the delicious food available at their inhouse restaurant Social Bird. You’ll be in for a hen-credible stay!

So luxurious, you might just want to move in…

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, or really want a space to properly relax and unwind in, sometimes it’s worth stretching the budget! But hey, don’t blame us if these hotels are that luxurious that you just want to move in…

We’re starting at the classic Crowne Plaza this time around, with their calming interiors and city centre location that’ll come in handy when it’s time to explore. Their on-site Mineral House spa is ideal for unwinding after the hustle and bustle – whether you take advantage of their ten-metre swimming pool, head to the steam room, or book in for a treatment.

City centre luxury can also be found at the Sandman Signature Hotel, just over the road from St. James’ Park. This modern, four-star venue houses 170 bedrooms and suites, including plenty of different varieties to ensure there’s enough room for everyone.

Nothing says luxury quite like an impressive view, and that’s just what three hotels down on the Quayside offer. INNSiDE by Meliá not only boasts an awesome exterior and delicious food at the Gino D’Acampo restaurant, but also offers a range of views thanks to their sleek floor to ceiling windows. But whether you fancy overlooking the River Tyne, lounging outside on a private balcony, or indulging with a stay at The Townhouse suite – well, we’ll leave that choice up to you!

Further down the Quayside you’ll find Malmaison Hotel, housed in a striking Grade II-listed building and right on the doorstep of the Millenium Bridge. Their range of rooms, deluxe rooms and suites are all effortlessly elegant, with moody lighting, power showers, and unbelievably comfy beds for a great nights sleep. Book here, and you’ll probably also want to take advantage of Chez Mal Brasserie and Bar to enjoy a unique twist on classic dining, as well as the in-house spa that’ll make any and all troubles melt away.

Dakota Hotel Dakota Hotel

The third of this trio is Dakota. New to the Newcastle scene they may be – but they’re fast gaining a reputation for the timeless luxury offered in each of their rooms. Expect everything from crisp cotton linen bedding and sumptuously soft bedding, to top-notch toiletries and an indulgent rainfall shower in the rooms here. That’s not forgetting the Dakota Grill and Bar on-site, and a dedicated cigar terrace, should you fancy kicking back with a humidor during your stay!

Effortlessly elegant, the Vermont Hotel is an unmistakable landmark in the city centre, full of 1930s glamour and grandeur that makes it an ideal spot for luxury holiday living. There’s standard bedrooms, suites and serviced apartments to make the most of here – but regardless of which you book, the venue’s Victorian and art deco sensibilities will certainly make your pals jealous of your stay there! And of course, there’s plenty more on-site to enjoy, including the dazzling all-weather rooftop bar ABOVE, delicious restaurant The Maven, the intimate Redwood Bar, late night cocktail bar Livello and incredible contemporary Asian restaurant Aveika.

Equally full of history and boutique luxury is Hotel du Vin on City Road. This beautifully restored Edwardian building on the banks of the River Tyne radiates charm and character with each room – but there’s all the modern touches you’d expect too, including flat-screen TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi. During your stay, check out Bistro du Vin to experience the perfect balance between French and British cuisine, and enjoy a wine tasting event from the hotel’s expert sommeliers in the Laroche tasting room.

And keep an eye out for…

We’ve included some top-notch Newcastle hoteliers that’re definitely worth checking out, but if you’ve got a little longer to wait until your next trip to the Toon, then don’t forget that Hotel Gotham will also be opening very soon! They’ll be based in the heart of the city on Pilgrim Street, and are set to offer six different room variations, as well as dining experiences at the Siren Restaurant. We can’t wait take a wander around ourselves!

And there you have it, the very best places to stay in Newcastle, from budget to luxury! One last piece of advice; look out for those member's rates! Quite often you’ll enjoy a different nightly rate if you’re signed up for an account with your chosen hotel, so make sure you don’t miss out on any savings. Regardless, whatever you’re in town for, we hope you love the city as much as we do, and we can’t wait to welcome you!
