Top Places for Hot Chocolate in the City

We decided to hunt down some of the best places to enjoy hot chocolate in the city

7 minutes Last updated:

There’s nothing more decadent and comforting than a steaming mug of hot chocolate! Whether it’s velvetised, topped with marshmallows or extra special with a splash of booze, it’s an indulgent treat that goes down even better in the cold winter months.

We decided to hunt down some of the best places to enjoy hot chocolate in the city, as well as the places you can buy the equipment and ingredients to make the perfect chocolatey drink at home too.

Enjoy in the City

Coffee Trader, Northumberland Street
An ideal pit stop on a shopping trip thanks to its location smack in the middle of the city’s prime shopping street. Coffee Trader is rightly famous for their full-flavoured dark roast coffee beans from El Salvador, and they’re equally as revered for their speciality drinks too. You’re the boss when it comes to hot chocolate – choose from delicious toppings including traditional marshmallows, chocolate or toffee pieces and a variety of syrups. A dusting of cinnamon adds a special sparkle.

Barluga, Grey Street

Hot chocolate isn’t just a sweet treat - it can be a boozy one too! Grey Street’s Barluga features a naughty but nice take on the traditional beverage on their dessert menu, which includes the addition of a shot of Baileys. Ask nicely, and they may also let you add whiskey, liqueur or other spirits too!

All Bar One, Grey Street

Trendy All Bar One put their own spin on the traditional hot chocolate flavourings; on the menu are delights like tiramisu, honeycomb, cappuccino and Black Forest. Also on a chocolatey tip, All Bar One have been known to pair up with the fabulous Hotel Chocolat for some incredible drinks pairings, so you can get your chocolatey fix in specialist cocktails too! Check online for availability.

Société Cafe Bar, Grey Street

Société brings a taste of the continent to Newcastle’s city streets, so their hot chocolate options are served in traditional European style; thick, indulgent and served with the requisite cream, it’s quite the treat. At certain times of the year, you’ll find flavoured options too, like the Christmassy gingerbread, peppermint and Amaretto options.

Flower Café, Grainger Street

You can’t have failed to notice the beautiful Flower Cafe on Grainger Street, bedecked in pink blooms and greenery both inside and out! Their hot chocolate is made in the traditional way with cream, and there are a variety of milk alternatives and flavoured syrups to try too.

The Dispensary, Heber Street

Tucked away on Heber Street, this wonderfully quirky science-themed restaurant and coffee shop will make you think twice about your food. As you’d expect, their hot chocolates are suitably quirky and infinitely Instagrammable; their Candyfloss Hot Chocolate is served in a conical flask, in a nod to their scientific theme, with sugary candyfloss served alongside – pour your chocolate over the top of the candyfloss for a deliciously sweet treat. Their Cloud 9 Hot Chocolate is equally as impressive, surrounded by candyfloss, covered in glitter, cream and sprinkles!

Pink Lane Coffee, Pink Lane

Pink Lane aren’t just known for their exquisite and expertly sourced coffee beans. The cosy cafe, which is just a hop, skip and jump from Central Station, also offer up a trio of perfectly made hot chocolates including a special white chocolate, a 41% cocoa creation and an exceptionally indulgent 80% cocoa version too.

Enjoy at Home

Hotel Chocolat, Blackett Street

Simply the best place for indulgent and delicious sweet treats, it’ll be no surprise that Hotel Chocolat is also the place to come for accessories and equipment to make the perfect drink at home. Try their Satin Black Velvetiser to make the creamiest drink imaginable, perfect for pairing with their sachets of hot chocolate which come in flavours including white chocolate, hazelnut praline, Black Forest gateau, peanut butter and more. A gift pack featuring all manner of delights is perfect for your chocoholic pal (or yourself!)

Whittard of Chelsea, Eldon Square

Known for their wonderful tea selection, Whittard are also hot chocolate experts! Discover cute stacking tins of their luxury hot chocolate, which include flavours like Turkish Delight, gingerbread, toffee popcorn and rocky road, plus their decadent hampers which include all the fixings you need to make the perfect beverage, from marshmallows to chocolate spoons.
