Spring 2025: 13 New Venues to Discover in Newcastle

Discover your new favourite haunt with our round-up of the city’s newcomers…

Last updated:
Mowgli Newcastle

Foodies are in for a whole season of fun this spring thanks to the smorgasbord of new restaurants that’ve made Newcastle their home over the past few months – from much-loved Indian restaurant chain Mowgli to local icon Colmans which joined Fenwick’s community of eateries in March.

We were also lucky enough to gain a brand-new boutique hotel (hello Dakota!) and saw the revamp of legendary music venue Hoochie Coochie. With so many fantastic new places to explore in the city, we’ve rounded them all up for you to discover – enjoy!

Mowgli, Nelson Street

The much-anticipated Newcastle branch of Indian restaurant Mowgli (pictured above) opened its doors on Nelson Street in March and it’s fast become a must-do for local foodies. Serving up the type of food that Indians cook and eat at home”, Mowgli’s menu features some seriously tempting plates full of bold flavours – Goan fish curry, ginger chicken and tea-steeped chickpeas included – and a gorgeous fairy light-bedecked space to enjoy them in.

Wingstop Wingstop

Wingstop, Grey’s Quarter, Eldon Square

Once a small chicken wing restaurant in Texas, Wingstop is now a global name and finally arrived in the North East this February when the chain opened a branch in Eldon Square’s Grey’s Quarter. Their signature wings, boneless wings and tenders are clucking delicious and bound to please anyone looking for some tasty chicken in Newcastle. They’re available in ten bold flavours – from the sweet and tangy to the super-spicy – and there’s plenty of sides and milkshakes to team them with.

Abajo Bar & Grill, Grey Street

A new addition to Newcastle’s grand Grey Street, Abajo Bar & Grill is a sports bar boasting comfy booths, a laidback vibe and TVs throughout showing everything from football and rugby to boxing and darts. There’s much more than live sports on offer at Abajo though – make sure to check out their tempting menu brimming with burgers, pizza and tapas dishes and don’t forget to take advantage of their regular drink deals either.

Dakota Newcastle Dakota Newcastle

Dakota Newcastle, Quayside

Staying overnight in Newcastle got a whole lot more glamourous when Dakota Newcastle opened its doors on the Quayside in late March, joining the city’s community of luxury hotels. With 118 beautifully appointed rooms and suites with all the modern conveniences guests could wish for, a bar and restaurant serving up cocktails and seasonal fine dining and a stunning location within walking distance of Newcastle’s major landmarks and destinations to boot, it’s the perfect choice for an upmarket stay in the city.

Priory Press, Nelson Street

It looks like Nelson Street is the place to be for foodies lately because Tynemouth-born juice bar Priory Press also set up shop there this spring. Stop by and refresh your palate with all manner of healthy juice concoctions but remember that it’s way more than just a juice bar – they serve up coffee, tea, sandwiches and açaí bowls too!

Pho Pho

Pho, Grainger Street

Dedicated to serving healthy and fresh Vietnamese food, Pho has taken the nation by storm and we’re happy to report we’ve finally got a branch in Newcastle on Grainger Street. They cook up loads of variations of the Vietnamese noodle soup plus plenty of curries, rice bowls and salads to boot.

Blacks Corner, Fenwick

Foodies south of the River Tyne may have already heard of Blacks Corner, the Boldon-based deli/restaurant that’s earned plenty of fans thanks to its delicious modern British cuisine. Luckily for us here in Newcastle, Blacks Corner has joined forces with Fenwick and set up shop in its iconic Food Hall. Book a table and try its signature British cheese and charcuterie boards – we promise you won’t be disappointed!

Colmans at Fenwick Colmans at Fenwick

Colmans, Fenwick

Blacks Corner isn’t the only new addition at Fenwick either. Colmans – who have been serving up their famous fish and chips in South Shields since 1926 – also joined the department store this spring. It would be remiss not to dine there and try their award-winning fish and chips, of course, but don’t miss out on the rest of their menu either – there’s dishes like mushy pea fritters, grilled king prawns and steak and brown ale pie to feast on as well.

Pilgrim, Pilgrim Street

A collective gasp echoed across Newcastle when news broke that legendary bar and live music venue Hoochie Coochie was up for sale but luckily it’s been replaced with Pilgrim which – like its forebear – remains dedicated to championing music of black origin. With a funky, laidback vibe and gigs from artists and DJs covering everything from Northern soul and classic funk to jazz, disco and house, Pilgrim is thankfully still a haven for music lovers in the North East.

The Forest Boost The Forest Boost

The Forest Boost, Grainger Market

There are always new and exciting places setting up shop in Grainger Market’s myriad of alleyways and this spring is no different as the market welcomed newcomers The Forest Boost. Its superfood central and sells a range of juices, smoothies and Brazilian-inspired açaí bowls perfect for people looking for a healthy bite to eat.

Hooters, Bigg Market

American chain Hooters opened its doors in Newcastle’s iconic Bigg Market back in late February and it’s already making its mark on the city. It’s the place to head for live sports and tasty American diner food like wings, sliders, burgers and hot dogs. Wash down with an ice-cold beer for the ultimate Hooters experience.

Fluffy Fluffy Fluffy Fluffy

Fluffy Fluffy, Grainger Street

Souffle pancakes are all the rage right now and Grainger Street newcomer Fluffy Fluffy serves up some of the best in the Toon. Their award-winning souffle pancakes come in all kinds of flavours – from tiramisu and strawberry to crème brûlée and pistachio – and there’s cheesecakes, croffles and a wide range of drinks to try too.

Davey’s, Market Street

Local success story Davey’s already boasts branches in Gateshead and Sandyford (plus pop-ups at St. James STACK and STACK Seaburn) and they’ll soon be setting up shop in the city centre – much to our delight! Taking over the former Flore Café space on Market Street, they’ll be serving up loaded bagels, smash breakfast burgers, freshly squeezed juices and signature milkshakes in the Toon very, very soon – so watch this space!

Fine Indian fare, healthy juices, boutique overnight stays – there are so many new things and places to try in the city this spring. So, what are you waiting for? Go forth and discover!
