Unlock the Fun: A Guide to Newcastle’s Best Escape Rooms

After a challenge? Head to one of these Newcastle-based escape rooms!

Last updated:

Regardless of whether you fancy yourself a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, or think you’re more wannabe Watson, grab your deerstalker and magnifying glass because we’re following the clues through Newcastle’s best escape rooms.

The Toon is lucky enough to play host to five fantastic escape rooms, each with something different to offer. So if you’re locked in – pardon the pun – we’ve got the lowdown on ‘em all!

LVLS Newcastle, Princess Square

With six different themed escape rooms to pick from, LVLS Newcastle offers a different experience with every visit! There’s a prison to break out from, a wizard disappearance to solve, and even one room where Professor Moriarity has enlisted you and your team to break into 221B Baker Street – Sherlock Holmes’ very own apartment! Plus, they’ve got a new adventure coming soon, that might just lead to an encounter with a certain Mr Todd the Barber… Anyway, each room can host around 2-5 players, so it’s worth getting this one in the group chat!

LVLS also plays host to incredible virtual reality escape room experiences, where each player has their own VR headset. You’ll be able to see and interact with each other inside the game to escape – just like you would in a traditional escape room! There’s five of these digital dramas to pick from, including two from the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and another set within the Prince of Persia trilogy.

The Escape Key Newcastle, St Andrew’s Street

Meanwhile, the plague pits and witch burials of St. Andrew’s Church have given The Escape Key Newcastle all the inspiration they need for some truly unique escape room experiences. There are four options here, each inspired by the Toon’s history. Escape the hangman’s noose in “Witch”, avoid the Black Death in “Plague”, help light up Newcastle in “Electric City” and explore the Cold War bunker of “Armageddon”.

Plus, they even offer loads of teambuilding experiences for workplaces – including bespoke teambuilding at your workplace. Students can also take on their monthly challenge, where they’ll get their money back if they escape in under one hour with three hints or less! Regardless of which adventure you pick, The Escape Key Newcastle has an impressive number of awards behind them too, so you’ll be in good hands until you make it back out the door.

EXIT Newcastle EXIT Newcastle

EXIT Newcastle, Westgate Road

For the last ten years, EXIT Newcastle on Westgate Road have welcomed the city’s sleuths for over forty thousand games, so it’s fair to say that they know what they’re doing when it comes to escape rooms! There’s five options here, each with varying difficulty and theming. Perhaps most notably though is their horror-themed experience “The Attic”, where visitors are tasked with escaping before the killer returns to the room. Apparently only 40% of groups manage to flee”, so you’ll need to make sure that you and the team are on top form!

That’s not forgetting that NHS staff and students can enjoy exclusive discounts on their game with a valid form of I.D., and of course they welcome any groups that fancy a teambuilding challenge too.

Smash Space UK, Scotswood Road

As well as housing its iconic Rage Rooms, Smash Space UK is home to the Clumanji Escape Room! Visitors are challenged to solve different puzzles and clues to work their way through the jungle and fight against the game to life the curse and escape Clumanji for good.

Plus, they’ve got large group bookings and package deals aplenty if you fancy releasing some inner angst after you’ve escaped. Their gold package includes four activities with up to twenty participants per session, so it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in charge of planning the next team building session, or birthday party!

Escape Newcastle, The Gate, Newgate Street

And last, but by no means least, you’ll find Escape Newcastle. Tucked away inside The Gate, this hidden gem has two experiences to pick from. “First Contact” challenges visitors to escape a spaceship before their alien captor returns, while “Dead Man’s Hand” sees the robotic hosts of a cowboy-themed amusement park go awry.

If you make it out before your sixty minutes are up, why not head to Nando’s or The WonderBar inside The Gate for a celebratory meal? And if not, well there’s always The Keel Row and Pizza Hut if you need a commiseration drink, or pizza slice!

Go on, gather your team in the group-chat and get your thinking caps on. The only puzzle left will be which one to book first!
