NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week: Where to Eat Great Gluten-Free Food

We round up some of the best gluten-free food to enjoy during January’s Restaurant Week

Last updated:

Let’s not beat around the bush – eating out when you’re gluten-free isn’t always easy.

But this Restaurant Week, we’ve done the legwork and scoped out some restaurants with plenty of gluten-free options, so no-one has to miss out.

Blackfriars, Friar Street

No matter who you’re enjoying Restaurant Week with this January, Blackfriars (pictured above) has menu options to keep everyone happy. Almost everything on their menu is gluten-free, and some are vegan too, like the leek and potato soup, pan-roasted bubble ‘n’ squeak and coffee and almond tiramisu which you can enjoy as part of their £25 offer.

City Tavern, Northumberland Street

Tucked away on busy Northumberland Street, all City Tavern’s Restaurant Week menu is gluten-free, or can be made gluten-free upon request. And with two courses for £25 or three for £25, what better reason to dig into the likes of honey soy glazed pork ribs, boeuf en daube Provençale and lemon cheesecake?

El Coto, Leazes Park Road

With its cosy and warm interior, El Coto is the ideal spot for getting snug and enjoying some delicious tapas. When it comes to gluten-free dishes, there’s plenty included in their Restaurant Week offer – three tapas for £15 or three tapas and dessert for £20 – including queso manchego, champiñones al vino blanco (mushrooms sautéed in olive oil) and garbanzos (chickpea, tomato & spinach casserole).

Dakwala Dakwala

Dakwala, Grainger Street

Since opening last year, Dakwala’s quickly become a firm favourite amongst curry fans, and it’s easy to see why! Their delicious menu offers so many gluten-free options, like dakhouse chicken kadhai, Malwani chicken and paneer tikka lababadar to dig into with their two courses for £15 offer this Restaurant Week.

Nudo Malatang, Low Friar Street

Since undergoing a huge transformation last year, Nudo Malatang has been bringing popular Chinese dish malatang to the masses. And if you haven’t tried it out yet, then Restaurant Week is the ideal time! It’s all about customising your dish to your liking, picking a base, noodles, vegetables, tofu/meats to create a delicious malatang hot pot. There’s plenty of gluten-free options to pick from, and all their desserts are gluten-free too, so why not indulge in their two courses for £15 or three for £20 offer?

The French Quarter The French Quarter

The French Quarter, Westgate Road

Not only is The French Quarter’s Restaurant Week menu mouth-wateringly good, but it’s almost all gluten-free! Grab two courses for £20 or three for £25 to feast on delicious dishes including smoked mackerel pâté, herb-roasted chicken leg with tagliatelle and tarragon sauce and délice de chocolat.

Leila Lily’s, Grey Street

Leila’s Lily has some delicious gluten-free options on their Restaurant Week menu this year, so whether you’re going for their two courses for £15 or three for £20 offer, you won’t want to miss out. Indulge in the likes of roasted beetroot hummus to start, Aberdeen angus burger for mains, and mixed ice creams to finish.

Dabbawal, High Bridge

High Bridge hotspot Dabbawal are dishing up plenty of gluten-free goodness for Restaurant Week too. Tuck into murgh malai tikka or onion palak bhajis starters, before enjoying railway lamb curry or Malabar king prawn mains as part of their £20 offer.

Kaltur Kaltur

Kaltur, Dean Street/High Bridge

Inspired by the intimate restaurants and bars scattered across Spain, it’s fair to say that Kaltur knows a thing or two about terrific tapas. Their Restaurant Week menu is no different, with gluten-free options including patatas bravas, wild Atlantic king prawns and arroz con leche. You can enjoy two tapas for £15 or £20 or three for £25, depending on the dish and time of day.

Super Natural, Grainger Street

Super Natural might specialise in vegetarian and vegan food, but there’s loads of gluten-free options too. This Restaurant Week, they’re offering two courses for £20, so you can enjoy the likes of mushroom and aubergine lasagne, the jalapeño jack burger and chocolate and clementine torte, worry-free.

And there you have it! Some fantastic gluten-free eateries to enjoy during NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week – all worry-free. The only question left is where to book first…
