Everything You Need to Know About… Newcastle’s Christmas Markets

The city’s iconic Christmas Markets return this festive season with fun, food and shopping aplenty

Last updated:

The return of the Christmas Markets is a sure sign that the festive season is truly underway in the Toon.

This year they’ll be in place from mid-November until late December and are bringing a whole host of fantastic traders to make your Christmas shopping a little easier and a lot more fun. Read on for all the info you need to make the most of the markets this Christmas in Newcastle.

Where are the Christmas Markets located?

The market stalls are located at Grey’s Monument, Grey Street and Grainger Street and there’s a selection of hot food traders at Old Eldon Square too.

How long will the Christmas Markets be in place for?

The Christmas Markets officially open on Saturday 16th November and will be in place until Sunday 22nd December.

What time are the Christmas Markets open?

They’ll be open between 10am and 8pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays.

What kind of stalls are there?

There’s a fantastic variety of traders at the Christmas Markets this year selling everything from food and drink to gifts, art, jewellery, fashion, flowers and beauty products.

For fashionistas, there’s North East inspired t-shirt designs at The Big River stall and cosy winter hats and scarves at Acorn Outfitters plus gorgeous accessories to buy at Romanticise Jewellery and Sopharia Jewellery.

Gift shopping for the foodie in your life? Pick up delicious preserves from The Cherry Tree, sweet treats from Fudge Packers or raw British honey from The Honey Store. If they enjoy a tipple or two, then why throw in some craft brews from Firebrick Brewery or something a little stronger from Riverside Spirits, Sing Gin or O’Donnell Moonshine?

Lovers of art will want to check out Elemental Photography, Reflections Fine Art and Raw Print Shop and there’ll be festive floral decorations to purchase from Scents of Christmas and Katherine’s Florists.

Feeling hungry? Fear not as there are plenty of traders cooking up hot food for visitors to enjoy on the go including local faves like Redheads Mac ‘N’ Cheese, Acropolis and La Petite Crêperie, plus a trio of Festive Drink Hüttes dotted around dishing out luxury loaded hot chocolate and mulled wine.

For a full list of traders, their location and which dates they’ll be trading, visit the official Newcastle’s Christmas website.

What else is happening around the Christmas Markets?

So much! This year, there’s even more fun to be had at Old Eldon Square with the brand-new Christmas Village which will play host to lots of family-friendly activities and entertainment throughout the festive season – including a traditional carousel, the chance to hear tales from the Big Man in Red with Santa Stories plus stage shows and festive film screenings at the Rockin’ Reindeer stage.

There’s also a new addition to the markets area around Grey’s Monument with The North Pole – a collection of luxury, heated igloo domes situated on the monument plinth with views across the Christmas Markets and down Grey Street. They’re available to book for 1 hour 45 minute slots for £200 (redeemable against food and drink from the nearby Festive Drink Hütte) and the perfect for festive family or friend gatherings.

And of course, this Christmas will see the return of the much-loved Alpine pop-up bar Moosenwirt on Grey Street where visitors can cosy up with a drink or two after a shopping session at the Christmas Markets.

With so many fantastic traders – plus new additions like The North Pole and Christmas Village – Newcastle’s Christmas Markets look set to be bigger and better than ever before this year. Whether you’re shopping for gifts, entertaining your little ones, hungry for some tasty food on the go or having a festive drink with pals, it’s the place to be this Christmas!

Newcastle’s Christmas Markets will be open from Saturday 16th November until Sunday 22nd December. For more information, visit the official Newcastle’s Christmas website.
