NE1’s Summer in the City: Meet the Partners

Get to know the amazing companies helping to deliver our summer events programme

Last updated:

Summer in the City – our free and fun-packed programme of events – kicks off on 22nd July with a whole host of activities running throughout the school holidays, from tours and dance classes to yoga and fitness sessions.

It wouldn’t be possible, however, without the help of the amazing local companies we team up with to deliver our events and activities. So, we thought we’d catch up with them for a chat to find out what they love about taking part in NE1’s Summer in the City and what to expect from the events they’re hosting.

What do you love about being a part of NE1’s Summer in the City?

NE1’s Summer in the City gives us a fantastic opportunity to continue our dance classes with the public in the summer.  Historically, we have always followed suit of pausing classes during school holidays and this can sadden many of our participants. Therefore, NE1 helps us to serve the North East with dance and what better way to keep the dance community going than at the heart of the River Tyne? NE1 offers us a platform to showcase the huge variety of classes we do for all ages, of all abilities.

What can people expect from Dance City’s dance classes?

Energy, fun, passion! You can learn a new skill, or just dance with no limitations – feel free to explore how your body wants to move!

What is your favourite city centre hangout in the summer?

Mine has to be the Quayside. I am a born-and-bred Gateshead girl so I like to sit outside Pitcher & Piano and watch people pass by. The Quayside offers everything – I brought my 5-year-old son to NE1’s activities for children last summer which were fab even with rain!

What do you love about being a part of NE1’s Summer in the City?

Meeting all the new people and seeing some favourite faces too! We've been partnering with NE1 for 5 years now, and in that time we've met so many people that would probably never have tried yoga otherwise. One year we just had some dads escaping from the Princess Painting Party that was happening right next to us and one of them is a regular member still! Whilst it's always lovely to share yoga with new people, we can rely on a hardcore of some Summer in the City regulars showing up.

What can people expect from your yoga classes?

Our yoga classes are open level, light-hearted, responsive and everyone is welcome. We'll heat them up when it’s cooler outside and slow them down when the sun is blasting... fingers crossed we get lots of sun this year!

What is your favourite city centre hangout in the summer?

With a dog and 7-year-old in tow our favourite city centre hang out is usually whatever amazing RASKL creation gets put up on the Quayside.

What do you love about being a part of NE1’s Summer in the City?

It’s a great opportunity to showcase some of the best things about living in Newcastle, and a chance to take some time to remind ourselves of how much Newcastle has to offer. With it being in the summer we can focus on some of the outside activities too.

What can people expect from Newcastle City Guides’ tours?

Newcastle City Guides love sharing their enthusiasm and passion for the city. The walks on offer this season show different elements of the city - from the history of the Quayside to a reminder of some of the great residents of Newcastle who made our city what it is. Hopefully they will inspire people to think more about the place where they live.

What is your favourite city centre hangout in the summer?

I love being on the Quayside in the summer - the Tyne is such a great river and the regeneration of the Quayside has been outstanding. It’s great to finish the day with a drink in one of the bars - my favourite is probably the beer garden at The Broad Chare.

What do you love about being a part of NE1’s Summer in the City?

We love being part of NE1 Summer in the City programme as it allows us to showcase our services to a wide range of customers. Our team have the freedom to create a variety of events to cater for a different audiences across the summer period, which increases footfall throughout the city for fellow local businesses.

What can people expect from your kids' events?

As we work on our second year of events with NE1 Summer in the City, we have created a jam-packed summer schedule to bring entertainment for the full family to enjoy across all age ranges! Our themed mid-week sessions provide a more personal event experience with hands on activities to get involved with as a family. Our 'Kids Club' parties incorporate a whole range of entertainment into one fun-filled event, including a mini disco, character meet and greets, live sing-a-long performances and hands on activities. With something on site for all ages, they are perfect for those family days out enjoying the sunshine.

What is your favourite city centre hangout in the summer?

Our favourite city centre hang out would have to be Newcastle Quayside. As a company we have spent the past three summer seasons in the heart of Newcastle Quayside, providing family events. We love the range of customers who visit the area and the beautiful backdrop of the famous bridges along the Tyne. On a summers day it’s the perfect place to get together with loved ones and see what our wonderful city has to offer.

It’s your first time taking part in NE1’s Summer in the City – what are you most excited about?

I am most excited to be part of the NE1 community, providing some fitness classes, some tastes of our Run Club and most importantly bridging the gap between fitness and social.

What can people expect from your fitness sessions and 5k run?

Community. Our classes will be all about togetherness, community and teamwork. We will work in teams for our fitness classes and run as a big collective for our 5km! Fast, slow, or anything in between- we are all together. The run club will also be a great route, seeing the best of the Quayside!

What is your favourite city centre hangout in the summer?

There are a few, for the perfect summer day- it would start at Local in Jesmond with a flat white, before going to CrossFit Tyneside for a community team workout. For food it would be Sushi Me Rollin' in the city centre and ending with a frozen Marg from Little Lobos in Sandyford.

We love the North East and love nothing more than getting in among the buzz and showcasing just how amazing our city is. NE1 have been an amazing support to us, so it's really great that we are able to give something back and provide people with the opportunity to see Newcastle's Quayside from a completely different perspective - the water.
