Meet the Cast of Theatre Royal’s The Little Mermaid: Part 2

We grilled panto legend Chris Hayward about Theatre Royal’s 2024 production …oh yes we did!

Last updated:

Panto season is in full swing in Newcastle and Theatre Royal’s festive productions are always a joy.

This year, classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid gets the panto treatment and Theatre Royal regular Chris Hayward makes a welcome return to the stage as the Evil Sea Witch. We were lucky enough to catch up with him for a chat about what makes The Little Mermaid a must-do this festive season.

How does it feel to be returning for another pantomime season at Newcastle Theatre Royal?

It feels absolutely fantastic to be back at the Theatre Royal and as The Little Mermaid is a brand-new production, there’s a fresh energy. I know I say it every year, but this pantomime really does feel bigger and better than ever!

What do you love most about performing in Theatre Royal pantomimes?

The thing I love most is the audience—they’re just incredible. Coming to watch the pantomime is such a big tradition for so many families here and it's great to speak to people who have been watching since they we’re little and now they’re bringing their own children!

The Little Mermaid is a brand-new title – is it nerve-wracking debuting something that audiences haven’t seen before?

It’s definitely a bit nerve-wracking, but in the best way possible. We have rehearsals before we start the performances, so we have time to learn lines, songs, and choreography. With a brand-new title like The Little Mermaid, there’s a sense of challenge because we still have to raise the bar each year.

Can you tell us a bit more about the character you’re playing in The Little Mermaid?

I’m playing the Evil Sea Witch who is the wicked auntie to the Little Mermaid. She’s such a fun character to play because she’s so dramatic, and I've got some fab costumes to wear. I was Dame Rita Rigatoni in Pinocchio last year, who is a goody, so being back on the evil side is fun.

If you could give one reason why people should see The Little Mermaid, what would it be?

The Little Mermaid has something for everyone - amazing scenery and special effects, catchy songs, and hilarious comedy.

The Little Mermaid runs until 12th January 2025 and a limited number of tickets are still available. To book, visit the Theatre Royal website.
