Our monthly round-up of events in the city centre returns for March

From Mother’s Day and International Women’s Day to British Science Week and St Patrick’s Day, there’s a lot to celebrate in Newcastle this March!
We’ll be donning our lab coats for the return of Life Science Centre’s Science Speakeasy, treating our mams to some delicious afternoon tea, and enjoying a Guiness or two at Paddy Fest, just to name a few things on the calendar. So, are you in?
Newcastle Cocktail Week @ City Centre
Following the huge success of their first year in 2024, Newcastle Cocktail Week returns this March to shake (or stir?) things up around Toon. Expect fifty bars and restaurants to be taking part in this ten-day event, offering a plethora of drink discounts. So whether you’re after a margarita on a Monday, or a sidecar on a Saturday, it’s worth grabbing a wristband for - find out more with our Newcastle Cocktail Week guide!

Paddy Fest @ Times Square
Grab a Guiness and your best green garb because Paddy Fest is well and truly back! Their ‘Super Saturday’ celebrations aren’t to be missed, with live Six Nations Rugby on the big screen, as well as live music and DJs to keep you partying well into the night. Sounds like good craic, if you ask us.

Northern Wedding Show @ Utilita Arena
Tying the knot this year? Then you’ll be hard-pressed not to find some inspiration at the Northern Wedding Show! Bigger and better than ever, more than 130 of the region’s superior suppliers will be calling the Utilita Arena home for the weekend. And that’s not forgetting the catwalk shows, and thousands of pounds worth of wedding giveaways throughout the weekend too. Trust us, you’ll want to say ‘I do’ to this.

Jenni Winter’s Sing Along Pian-Oke @ Prohibition Bar
Jenni Winter returns to the Prohibition Cabaret Bar this March for her monthly Sing Along Pian-Oke! She’ll be taking to the keys, while you sing your heart out on stage. But don’t worry, the bar will be open throughout the night should you need some Dutch courage to get going. While there’s free entry on the night, Prohibition’s iconic Jar on the Bar will be out for any cash tips after sharing the spotlight with Jenni.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea @ Laing Art Gallery
Consider this your first reminder – Mother’s Day lands on Sunday 30th March this year! If you fancy treating your mam to something extra special, then why not head to the Laing Art Gallery? You’ll dig into delicious sandwiches, freshly baked scones and mouth-watering pastries together, and mam will even go home will a lovely small bouquet of flowers too. Brownie points pending…

Science Speakeasy – Life with Robots @ Life Science Centre
March also plays host to British Science Week this year, celebrating everything science, technology, engineering and maths – so what better way to celebrate than with the return of the Life Science Centre’s Science Speakeasy? This month, they’ll be debating how robots could form part of the solution to the care crisis in the UK. Ticket holders will also have the opportunity to see the incredible art installation Luma – a giant, robotic, glowing snail! – before heading to the debate.

Hundreds of Beavers Live + Q&A with Ryland Brickson Cole Tews @ Tyneside Cinema
For something a little different to your usual cinema visit this March, take a trip to Tyneside Cinema. They’ll be screening Mike Cheslik’s latest slapstick comedy film Hundreds of Beavers before a live Q&A from the film’s very own lead Ryland Brickson Cole Tews. And don’t worry, hundreds of beavers won’t be present for the screening… as far as we know.

Deeds, Not Words: Walking Tour @ Newcastle City Centre
With International Women’s Day taking place on Saturday 8th March, Adventours bring their new tour Deeds, Not Words to the city centre this month. Join them on Saturdays throughout the month to uncover stories about the remarkable local women who helped contribute to campaign for the right to vote. Plus, the ninety-minute tour is wheelchair accessible and dog-friendly, so no-one has to miss out!

The Magic Flute – Opera North @ Theatre Royal
Join Prince Tamino on his mission to find love in The Magic Flute as James Brining’s production arrives at the Theatre Royal this March! It promises to be a fantastic introduction to opera if you haven’t seen any before, but if you fancy something a little shorter, there’ll also be a production of The Magic Flute Lite, with a 1h 45m runtime that doesn’t compromise on all the magic, drama and music of the original - perfect for kids and families!

Hot 8 Brass Band @ Wylam Brewery
The Grammy-winning Hot 8 Brass Band are bringing the sounds of New Orleans to Newcastle’s Wylam Brewery this month. Following the release of their upcoming album Big Tuba, it’s set to be an incredible night of live music, whether you’re a seasoned fan of their funk-style tunes, or a genre newcomer.
