How To Celebrate British Pie Week In Newcastle

The French Oven, Grainger Market

This award-winning artisan bakery in the Grainger Market isn’t all delicate pastries and sweet treats - they also do a mean range of magnifique homemade pies! Get your fork into flavourful fillings such as mince and onion, ham and egg and a classic steak and kidney pie. Despite this being a French-meets-English bakery, their scotch pie has been a best seller for years - who’d have thought it! Turns out they’re just really good at making pies with any filling they fancy.

Pink Lane Bakery, Pink Lane 

Pink Lane Bakery is one of the city’s most popular artisan bakeries, with shops in Pink Lane as well as Gosforth and Jesmond (and regular pop-ups across the city). Their whole menu is a taste sensation, including their pies: the line-up changes regularly but look out for their steak and Newcastle Brown Ale pie.

Redhouse, Sandhill

This cosy Quayside hotspot has a reputation for some of the best pies in Newcastle! Adopting an "if it ain’t broke don’t fix it" attitude to their crusty delights, Redhouse’s menu is filled top-to-toe with mouthwatering traditional handmade pies. With everything from classic steak and Newcastle Brown Ale, to vegan-friendly sweet potato, chickpea and spinach, Redhouse is a pie lover’s dream! Perfectly pair your pastry with their signature creamy mash or thick-cut chips, choose your peas and your sauce, and you’ve got a meal made in comfort food heaven!

City Tavern, Northumberland Street

One of the city’s most popular pubs, City Tavern is a genuine institution with a reputation for home-cooked food that far exceeds most pub menus. They keep it simple but delicious, offering a a steak pie made with City Tavern's very own ale and served with hand-cut chips and mushy peas. Let's just say it's one of their most popular dishes for a reason!

Milligans Bakery, Northumberland Street

For classic pies on the go, you simply can’t beat Milligans! This family-owned Geordie business has been selling delicious pies in Newcastle for over 60 years now. The Northumberland Street shop is the perfect place for a pie pick-me-up at lunch. Choose from chicken, minced beef, or steak and onion - they’re all equally lush!

The Victoria Comet, Neville Street

From its prime location right outside Central Station, The Victoria Comet is a Newcastle institution (it was even featured in Get Carter) that does a lot of things just right, not least its food menu. And at the heart of the menu are pies: hand-crafted and with some tasty sides, they serve some very tasty options that change seasonally - expect the likes of chicken, mushroom and cider and steak and pale ale.

From minced beef and onion to pork pies and some very appealing family plate pies, Dicksons have all your pie needs covered.

We think pies are something we should enjoy all year round – tasty, filling and available in endless varieties all over the city – but if you need a reason to get stuck in, British Pie Week seems like a great one!
