Meet the Grainger Market Traders: Tian’s Gifts

We get to know the popular Grainger Market gift shop a little better

Last updated:

Tian’s Gifts set up shop in Newcastle’s Grainger Market back in 2018 and has since developed a steadfast following.

Specialising in handmade gifts and cards crafted in China, it’s a lovely place to head for a unique present and rightfully popular thanks to its gorgeous range and lovely owner Tian Tang. We caught up with Tian to find out a little more about her journey so far.

What inspired you to set up Tian’s Gifts?

I was inspired by a friend in China. When I visited her studio, I was fascinated by the artwork, so I went to talk to different artists and persuaded them to allow me to bring their amazing artwork to the UK. Then I started my shop in the Grainger Market selling oriental crafts and gifts.

What made you decide to move to Newcastle to set up your business?

I completed my master's degree at Durham University and I really fell in love with the North East of England. I love the kindness and warmth of the people here. From the first time I was called ‘pet’ and ‘flower’ by local people, to walking on the street and being told by strangers that I have a lovely smile, I knew that I wanted to stay here because of the incredibly warm people.

Where do you source your products from?

I source everything directly from the studios where they are crafted in China. I source every single item sold at the shop and ensure everything is at a high standard.

What are your most popular products? Do you have a particular favourite product?

The most popular products are definitely our 3D pop-up cards and traditional Chinese hairpins. My favourite products are our lucky bracelets – I have heard so many wonderful stories from customers who have had good luck since wearing our bracelets. I have even received thank you cards after a customer won the lottery a few days after buying one.

You’ve won quite a few awards since setting up Tian’s Gifts. How does it feel to have your efforts recognised?

I am very lucky and grateful that I have won a few awards since setting up Tian's Gifts. The awards have enabled me to attend some events that I didn't think would be possible, for example being invited to the House of Lords and attending a round table meeting with the Chancellor of Exchequer. I am very grateful that my voice can be heard in this way.

However, one of my favourite awards is the Customer Service Award by Newcastle City Council. It was a great honour to be awarded the plaque and certificate by the Lord Mayor Councillor, David Cook. I take pride in my customer service at Tian's Gifts and I want to create a space where everyone feels comfortable as soon as they walk into the shop.

What advice would you give someone who wants to set up their own business?

Just do it! If I can do it, you can too. If you already have an idea in your head, you have planted the seed – now let's take action and make it grow.

I didn't know much about Newcastle when I first started my business – and I didn't know how to use Instagram until a trader's mum taught me how to use it. If I can start a business you can too.

What do you love most about having a shop in the Grainger Market?

I am extremely grateful for the support and help I have received from other traders, the local community and the council. The traders really do look out for each other and it’s reassuring to know there are always people who are willing to help. This is a wonderful community.

Tian’s Gifts is located in Units 167-168 on Alley 4 in Grainger Market and is open from Monday to Saturday between 9:30am and 5pm. For more information visit www.tiansgifts.co.uk
