Experience… Film Nights at Newcastle Castle

Last updated:

For film fans looking for a unique way to watch a movie, Newcastle Castle is the place to go. Every month, the Castle hosts a number of film screenings that span all kinds of genres – from horror and fantasy to cult classics, sci-fi and everything in between.

We popped along to watch one of their spooky screenings this October, so here’s everything you need to know about Film Nights at Newcastle Castle.

Where do the Film Nights take place?

In the dramatic, high-ceilinged Great Hall in the Castle Keep. The Keep dates back to the 12th century and it’s one of the finest preserved Castle Keeps from that period in the whole country. It’s played host to many kings, queens and other noblemen and women over the course of its long and colourful history and even welcomed King Edward I in the winter of 1292!

What film did you see?

Disney’s Halloween classic Hocus Pocus! The Castle have been screening horror and Halloween-friendly films – from The Exorcist to Nosferatu the Vampyre - throughout October to celebrate the spookiest season of the year.

Does the Castle sell cinema snacks and drinks?

No, but you’re more than welcome to bring your own snacks and refreshments – so feel free to load up on popcorn, sweets and drinks at a supermarket before taking your seat.

What’s it like watching a film in a castle?

Really atmospheric and even a little spooky… although that could be because Halloween is fast approaching! Hocus Pocus isn’t exactly the scariest Halloween film out there, but we were a definitely a little spooked when the Castle staff turned the lights off in the Great Hall so the film could begin!

Remember, it’s a 12th century Castle Keep so it can get pretty chilly in there – even for us Geordies who supposedly don’t feel the cold! Make sure you wrap up warm, especially if you’re catching a film in winter months.

Why not just go to a “normal” cinema?

Regular cinemas are great and all, but how many people can say they’ve watched a movie in the very same room where King Edward I once sat?!

Trust us - there’s just something special about catching a film in such a grand space soaked in so much local history.

What films are Newcastle Castle showing next?

They’ve got a fantastic line-up of films coming in November, kicking off with a very befitting screening of V for Vendetta on Bonfire Night during which guests will have the opportunity to head to the roof of the Castle Keep to look out for firework displays.

They’re also showing sci-fi horror Quatermass and the Pit and classic 80s fantasy film The NeverEnding Story, and in December they’re showing a whole host of festive films – from Frozen and The Polar Express to The Muppet Christmas Carol and Elf.

How much are tickets?

Tickets for Film Nights at the Castle usually cost £12, but they’re offering some special discounted tickets for kids, families and seniors during their December daytime screenings.
