Everything You Need to Know About… Galeon Andalucia
Planning a visit to the Galeón Andalucía? Here’s all the info you need
In case you haven’t already heard, a stunning replica of a Spanish galleon – the Galeón Andalucía – is set to sail into Newcastle this summer for lovers of history to explore its decks.
It’s a unique opportunity to witness a faithfully recreated slice of maritime history in the flesh, so we’ve gathered together all the information you need to visit Galeón Andalucía while it’s docked in the city.
What is Galeón Andalucía?
It’s a painstakingly faithful replica of the galleons sailed around the world by Spanish explorers and traders between the 16th and 18th centuries.
Owned and operated by the Nao Victoria Foundation, the 160ft long ship serves as a floating museum and invites visitors aboard to explore its decks and learn all about Spanish naval history.
It’s already sailed thousands of miles across the oceans – from Shanghai to Singapore and Hong Kong to New York – and now it’s sailing into Newcastle for the first time.
Where is the Galeón Andalucía?
The Galeón Andalucía will be moored at Spillers Quay on Hadrian’s Wall Path close to The Cycle Hub.
How long will it be in Newcastle for?
The ship will be docked in the city from Tuesday 25th June to Sunday 7th July and will be open from 10am to 8pm each day.
How do I get to Spillers Quay?
Spillers Quay is located a little way out of the city centre, but it’s still pretty easy to get to.
For those travelling by car, put NE6 1BU into your sat nav and park up at Spillers Car Park. It’s open seven days a week (closed between 10pm and 6am) and costs 70p an hour from Monday to Saturday between 8am and 6pm but is free on Sundays.
If you’re planning on getting the bus, nearby Walker Road has several bus stops all served by the Q3 which can be caught from several city centre stops.
The closest Metro Station is Byker which is around a 20-minute walk from Spillers Quay, but you could always get off at Central Station and enjoy a nice stroll along the Quayside before visiting the Galeón Andalucía – that way you’ll get to see the ship in all its glory as you approach!
What can I expect to see on the ship?
The magnificent galleon is a sight to behold even from land with a huge wooden hull, three masts and seven massive sails.
Once on board, visitors are free to stroll its six decks which include historically accurate recreations of a gun deck, an Officers’ mess and a cabin. There’ll be exhibits, videos, projections and historical documents to enjoy and the chance to talk to the Galeón Andalucía crew too.
Is it family-friendly?
It certainly is and we think kids will love exploring this maritime marvel and learning more about the ship! Kids of all ages are welcome, but under 5s must be accompanied by an adult.
How much do tickets cost?
Tickets cost £12 for adults and kids over 10, £6 for children aged 5-10 years old and admission is free for under 5s. Family tickets priced at £30 are also available and include entry for two adults and up to three kids aged 5-10.
The galleon also offers guided visits for schools costing £6-£12 with one free teacher’s place for every 20 children. Email [email protected] for more information or to book a school visit.
How do I book tickets?
Tickets for the Galeón Andalucía can be bought online at https://tickets.velacuadra.es/ or on the ship, but we’d recommend booking in advance to avoid missing out on the unique opportunity to visit the Galeón Andalucía.
Call us a bunch of salty seadogs, but we couldn’t be more excited to welcome the Galeón Andalucía to Newcastle and we’re sure you are too – so get those tickets booked!
