Christmas 2023: Where to Go for Christmas Day Lunch in Newcastle
A round-up of restaurants offering some sumptuous alternatives to Christmas lunch at home
There are all sorts of reasons why you might decide not to have a big Christmas lunch at home and would rather let professionals handle it instead.
Space is one – you might not have a big enough dining room (or kitchen) to get it all done properly. Or perhaps you’re away from home. Or perhaps – let’s be honest – you’d rather not have to bother this year and the idea of paying somebody else to do it just appeals!
Whatever the reason, there are some great restaurants in Newcastle that can serve you and yours a belly-busting, all-the-trimmings Christmas lunch with no more effort on your part than waving your credit card at them at the end.
The Vermont Hotel, Castle Garth
The festivities at The Vermont Hotel are second-to-none and they've got two amazing options for Christmas Day dining. Their family banquet (£84.95/adults, £42.95/under 10s, £15.95/under 3s) is hosted in the Gold Room (from 1pm-3pm) or the Ballroom (3:30pm-5:30pm) and includes a glass of prosecco on arrival and a 3-course meal, with the turkey served family style and a veggie/vegan option available on request. Alternatively, there's an even more lavish lunch (£94.95/adults, £54.95/under 10s, £15.95/under 3s) which sees you greeted with kir royales and canapes, fed a sumptuous 3-course lunch and then coffee and mince pies. There are two sittings at 12.30pm and 3.30pm.
Miller & Carter, Mosley Street
The renowned Mosley Street steakhouse isn’t kidding when it says their Christmas Day menu is indulgent! There’s some appealing canapes, a quintet of starters (including a delicious looking souffle), a 30 day aged prime Fillet 8oz or Ribeye 12oz topped with sautéed wild scallops with your choice of sauces and sides, and a coup-de-grace style dessert list. And if you don’t fancy steak, there are alternatives – sea bass, butternut squash roast and the traditional turkey. The whole thing costs £94.95pp and there are gluten free options and a special menu for younger guests too.
Royal Station Hotel, Neville Street
Spend Christmas Day in the Royal Station Hotel's lavish Victoria Suite enjoying a particularly indulgent three-course festive meal. For £75 per person (£37.50 for under 11s), you’ll be treated to everything from wild mushroom & garlic soup, smoked salmon, Christmas pudding, apple & blackberry crumble and, of course, the main attraction - roast turkey with all the trimmings (and we really do mean all!). There are fish and vegetarian options too. All this plus prosecco on arrival and mince pies to close.
Gino D’Acampo, Quayside
Having Christmas lunch on the Quayside with the winter sun streaming through those huge windows sounds lovely, even before you consider their tempting Christmas Day menu. Priced at £120 per person, you’ll be welcomed with prosecco and Italian breads before sitting down to a really special three-course meal. Starters include chicken liver pate and beef carpaccio and are followed by mains like turkey escalope, crispy duck and spinach and ricotta ravioli. The desserts are just as decadent with options including Baileys panna cotta and an Italian artisan cheese board.
Malmaison, Quayside
A little bit further along the Quayside you’ll find Malmaison also bringing some of their magic to Christmas. Christmas lunch is a four-course affair in the Malmaison Bar & Grill and costs £109 per person, including a glass of champagne on arrival. The menu does offer turkey with all the trimmings but also some less typical choices – treacle-cured salmon, gnocchi ricotta bake, Black Forest trifle and Valrhona chocolate truffles with coffee to finish.
Hotel du Vin, City Road
Hotel du Vin is also offering a particularly tempting Christmas Day menu priced at £109.95 per head. You could start with smoked duck breast salad or home-cured sea trout before cleansing your palate with a gin and tonic sorbet and feasting on the likes of turkey, monkfish, beef wellington or a vegan-friendly pithivier (all with all the trimmings, of course) and close with a range of sumptuous desserts. There's champagne on arrival too alongside crackers, mince pies and clementines after your meal.
The County Hotel, Neville Street
Finally there’s The County Hotel - a grand venue in the very centre of the city where you can choose between the County Suite, the Mozart Suite or The Hudson restaurant for your Christmas Day lunch. The County and Mozart suites are offering the same menu: a welcoming prosecco and soup for starter, then turkey and ham served family-style, and traditional Christmas desserts that costs £84.95 for adults, £42.95 for under 10s and £15.95 for under 3s. The Hudson is even more lavish – you’re greeted with champagne and your three-course meal includes souffles, duck and crab for starters, turkey, lamb or turbot for main and lots of tasty desserts too. There's two sittings - at midday and 3:30pm - and it'll set you back £95 for adults, £50 for under 10s and £15 for under 2s.
Blonde Barrel, Times Square
This year, Times Square hangout Blonde Barrel is going all out with a four-course festive banquet they're serving on Christmas Day between 12pm and 4pm. There'll be a retro cocktail bar theme, a roaring festive fireplace and classic Christmas songs playing all day too. Priced at £59.95 for adults and £14.95 for children under 8, guests can secure their booking with a 50% deposit with the remaining balance due on 1st December 2023.
We think you’ll agree that those are some fine sounding festive lunches to suit all kinds budgets, and you get the satisfaction of an excellent meal enjoyed with you and yours without the looming prospect of the massive pile of pots and crockery stacked high in the kitchen. So, why not give the family cook the year off and dine out in Newcastle this Christmas instead?
