British Science Week is back for 2025, so grab those lab coats because from 7th-16th March, the Toon will be abuzz with this celebration of science, engineering, technology and maths.
Whether you fancy learning something new, or getting the kids inspired and involved, check out some of our top picks for British Science Week in Newcastle below.
British Science Week @ Great North Museum: Hancock
Great North Museum: Hancock has put together a British Science Week programme that looks set to inspire schoolchildren of all ages. On the eve of British Science Week, the museum is inviting kids in years 11-13 to learn more about the impact of science with its talk "Science in Unexpected Places" and exploring careers that use science beyond the lab. During the rest of the week, there's hands-on workshops led by university scientists and local experts designed for Key Stage 2 schoolchildren and the chance for Year 8 students to join curator and storyteller Justine Boussard for “Generation Hope Newcastle”, where they'll learn the meaning of environmental stewardship - plus sessions for home educators and SEND schools.

In Conversation with Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon @ Newcastle University
Social entrepreneur and computer scientist Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon will be in conversation with Laura Heels (lecturer at the School of Computing) this British Science Week at Newcastle University. Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE served as President of the British Science Association from 2022 to 2023, and is CEO of Stemettes – a social enterprise supporting girls, young women and non-binary young people in STEM – so it’s set to be a fascinating discussion.

British Science Week @ Life Science Centre
Naturally, there's tonnes of family fun to be had at Life Science Centre during British Science Week. Alongside its usual live shows, experiments and making activities, the centre will also host Luma - a giant glowing robotic snail - from 7th to 15th March. And for teachers and schoolchildren, there's a series of special robotics-themed workshops link to the computing curriculum which are also designed to help students build communication and teamwork skills.

Science Speakeasy: Life with Robots @ Life Science Centre
If you're looking for something a little more adult-friendly, Life Science Centre's latest Science Speakeasy evening is ideal. Embodying the “change and adapt” theme for British Science Week 2025, this month's debate is around "Life with Robots". They’ll be exploring how and if robots could form part of the solution to the UK’s social care crisis, as well as offering visitors a chance to see the beautiful art instillation Luma – a giant, robotic glowing snail that’s calling the Life Science Centre home for British Science Week.

Matt Ridley: Birds, Sex and Beauty @ The Lit & Phil
Acclaimed science writer Matt Ridley arrives at The Lit & Phil during British Science Week to celebrate the launch of his new book Birds, Sex and Beauty – The extraordinary implications of Charles Darwin’s strangest idea. Interrogating Darwin’s theory that extravagant displays by male birds were intended to charm females, Ridley explores the evolution of mating displays around the world, from the ‘lek’ of the Black Grouse, to the Bowerbirds in Australia.

Steam to Green @ The Discovery Museum
Exploring the story of energy in the North East through the lens of the industrial revolution, the Discovery Museum’s Steam to Green exhibition is definitely worth checking out this British Science Week! There’s plenty of hands-on displays to explore that show how the North East has been leading the green revolution. Keep an eye out on their website for special Steam to Green events for kids and adults too!
