10 Grab & Go Lunches in Newcastle

We round up the best places for a quick lunch break in Newcastle

Last updated:

While we’re all for a nice long and lazy lunch break, taking in the sights and enjoying some of the amazing eateries the city has to offer, sometimes you’ve just gotta grab and go!

Thankfully, there are loads of great and varied options for a quick lunch, and just because you don’t have much time doesn’t mean you need to compromise on a tasty meal. Here, we highlight some of the great places for a quick bite at lunchtime in Newcastle.

Camera Shop, Collingwood Street

It’s flavours they’re developing rather than film at this quirky and proudly independent sandwich shop on Collingwood Street. Offering up punchy flavours that are a step above your average sarnie, expect delights like tuna and kimchi toastie, sourdough chicken club, the meat-laden Caveman sandwich packed with pastrami, chicken, ham, chorizo and bacon, and their special ‘super box’ which features a mix of healthy salad topped with tasty options like cauliflower and halloumi.

Priory Press, Nelson Street

Tynemouth favourite Priory Press has finally landed in the city centre! You’ll find the smoothie connoisseurs down Nelson Street, pouring up their iconic fresh juices and health shots. Proving that quick lunches don’t have to be unhealthy, they dish up nutritious acai bowls and pressed sandwiches on the daily with the likes of pistachio acai bowl and avocado crunch sandwich on the menu.

Greggs, Northumberland Street Greggs, Northumberland Street

Greggs, Various Locations

It wouldn’t be a lunchtime list without Greggs, and quite rightly so – the North East success story is the perfect place to grab an affordable bite for lunch, and their pastry products have become the stuff of legend (there are actual websites dedicated to the beauty that is a Festive Bake!). From flaky pastry delights like sausage rolls and pasties, to baguettes, hot toasties, chunky sandwiches and sweet treats like doughnuts and cookies, Greggs has every lunchtime base covered and you’re never far away from a branch!

Meat:Stack, Groat Market

Meat:Stack has been serving up delicious real American cheeseburgers since 2016 – so it’s fair to say that they know a thing or two about good food! Everything’s served fast food style so you won’t be hanging around for too long, and their lunch deal includes a burger, fries, chicken tender and soft drink for just a little over a tenner. Otherwise there's loads of burgers, fries and sides to pick from, with a couple of veggie and vegan options too.

Snackwallah at Grainger Market Snackwallah at Grainger Market

Grainger Market, Grainger Street

The Grainger Market has become synonymous with great street food – if you can choose between the vast array of stalls that is! Delights on offer include massive slices of fresh pizza at Slice, filling Cuban sandwiches packed with flavour at Cubanos, gooey mac and cheese from Redheads, Korean fare from Soju & Gogi, the authentic lip-smacking Chinese dumplings served up at Dumpling and Bun and veggie-friendly Indian street food from Snackwallah.

Subway, Various Locations

The freshly made options at Subway make it a perennial favourite when you’re in a hurry, with foot-long or 6-inch subs made just the way you like it. So whether you’re a spicy BMT kinda person or a veggie patty lover, there’s bound to be something on the menu just for you!

Frankie & Tony's Frankie & Tony's

Frankie and Tony’s, Ridley Place

Frankie & Tony’s is a real Newcastle gem and one of the longest established lunch eateries in the city. The family-run sandwich shop regularly has a queue snaking down the street thanks to its fresh sarnies which come with every filling you can imagine (and probably some you can’t!).

Eat For Less, Northumberland Street

There’s no need to skimp on quality if you’re on a budget, and the Eat For Less sandwich chain located in the heart of the shopping district is perfect for those watching their pennies. Their menu doesn’t just feature sandwiches either - choose from ciabatta paninis, jacket potatoes, burgers and loaded fries and all at prices that won’t break the bank!

I Scream for Pizza I Scream for Pizza

I Scream for Pizza, Newcastle Quayside

Quayside staple I Scream for Pizza is the ideal eatery if you’re after a taste of the Big Apple! Their New York-style slices offer loads of different toppings, and there’s sauces, shakes and sweet sundaes too in case you fancy a little extra. Plus, they're pretty much the masters of punny pizza names... "Truffle in Paradise" anyone?!

Baps, Pilgrim Street

This unassuming little deli and sandwich shop on Pilgrim Street has all your bread-based needs covered with paninis, subs, salad boxes, jacket potatoes, baguettes and much more. Plus they have regularly changing specials and wallet-friendly meal deals too.

Next time you need to grab lunch in a hurry, take a look around at Newcastle’s fast, friendly and tasty options and why not try something a little different?
