It’s time to dig out those birthday candles, because Tyneside Cinema is turning eighty years old! The Newcastle icon, which started life as a newsreel cinema and is still popular with film-lovers across the region, will be celebrating with a schedule of screenings picked by its audience.

With themed food and cocktails, and special events including a poster sale and film quiz, it’ll be a whole bank holiday weekend of birthday fun. So clear your diaries and head along – the word on the street is there’ll be birthday cake…

Avant-Garde Cinema

A fascinating series of experimental early cinema animation from around the same time as the cinema was opening in 1937. The free exhibition includes work by Len Lye, Mary Ellen Bute, Marcel Duchamp and Marie Menken and offers offer alternatives to traditional filmmaking. 11am.

The Great Tyneside Cinema Poster Sale

Bag yourself a cinematic souvenir in the form of an oh-so arty poster of your fave film. 10am.
