Shrove Tuesday will soon be upon us and there’s no better time of year to stuff your face with delicious pancakes.

In the spirit of all batter-based goodness, we’ve rounded up some of the tastiest places to grab a pancake or crêpe in Newcastle to help you celebrate.

Quay Ingredient, Queen Street

This quirky independent cafe is situated right underneath the Tyne Bridge, so it makes for a great pitstop while taking a Quayside stroll. They've got plenty to please pancake fans with a choice of French crepes or mini Dutch pancakes topped and a range of topping options including bacon and maple syrup, Nutella and whipped cream. Gluten-free pancakes are served too and there's several tempting savoury galette pancakes filled with the likes of Toulouse sausage and onion or smoked salmon and cream cheese.

Sweet Dreams Dessert Café, St Andrew’s Street

This delicious dessert restaurant will definitely satiate any pancake cravings you might have with several different varieties to choose from featuring inventive toppings like 'peanutella' banana, Aero mint and salted caramel. If you really want to embrace Shrove Tuesday, go for the VIP pancake - four warm, freshly made pancakes separately topped with Nutella and hazelnut pieces, Belgian chocolate and Kinder Bueno, Belgian chocolate with M&M's, and white Belgian chocolate with crushed Oreos.

The Dispensary The Dispensary

The Dispensary, Heber Street

This quirky cafe absolutely excels at pancakes. Their menu is a dream to behold for lovers of soft, American-style pancakes, served in temping stacks with toppings like strawberry and Nutella, Lotus Biscoff and even jam and custard. They have regular seasonal specials too, so expect them to pull something amazing out of the bag for Shrove Tuesday.

Horticulture, Market Lane

It's no secret that Horticulture boasts one of the best brunch menus in Newcastle and their American-style pancakes are understandably popular. They're available in three varieties - Biscoff, candied bacon or berry compote - and can be made vegan upon request.

Fluffy Fluffy Fluffy Fluffy

Fluffy Fluffy, Grainger Street

Since opening earlier this year, Fluffy Fluffy has been dishing up their award-winning souffle pancakes – and the Toon can’t get enough! These fluffy, airy delicacies can be topped with everything from pistachio and matcha to tiramisu and crème brulee. Originating in Japan, they're traditionally served at weddings, but they just look too good just to save for a special celebration!

Kaspa’s, Clayton Street

Sweet tooths are guaranteed to be happy with a trip to Kaspa’s for one of their crepes! Pick from the likes of banoffee, brownie, or a classic white or milk chocolate. In the mood for something a little more indulgent? Dig into the bananberry (fresh banana, strawberries, melted milk chocolate and milk chocolate flakes) or the Bueno (crispy Bueno pieces, white chocolate flakes, choco-hazelnut and white choco-nut sauce, served with Bueno gelato).

Olive Kitchen, Marlborough Crescent

Independent bistro, coffee and brunch house Olive Kitchen has four options to satisfy anyone’s penchant for a pancake, including the berrylicious (berry compote, vanilla ice cream and crushed meringue pieces), pistachio whirl (pistachio cream, white chocolate sauce, chopped pistachios and a scoop of vanilla ice cream), Nutella delight (Nutella, bananas and chopped nuts), and maple glazed (maple syrup, butter, turkey rashers). Decisions, decisions…

Crepes Gourmet Crepes Gourmet

Crepes Gourmet, Grainger Market

Alternatively, why not check out Crepes Gourmet? There’s a fine selection of savoury crepes – including the Spicy Diavola with salami, mushrooms, mozzarella, cheddar and fiery chilli mayo and jam - and of course a long list of sweet options too, from Ferrero Rocher to choco-banana. As well as having a lovely store in the Grainger Market, they're Quayside Market regulars too - and also tend to pop up at all sorts of events with their super-tasty crepe concoctions.

Souffle Baby, Westgate Road

Another great spot for Japanese souffle pancakes, Souffle Baby is tucked away down Westgate Road and dishes up several delightful varieties. Will you go for the maple syrup, eton mess or oreo? Or perhaps even the crème brulee, brown sugar tapioca or pistachio? Regardless, you'll also find plenty of drink options to wash it all down with here - including matcha and bubble tea!

Crepeaffaire Crepeaffaire

Crêpeaffaire, Eldon Square

Specialising in flippin’ awesome pancakes, Eldon Square eatery Crêpeaffaire serves wheat flour crepes and gluten-free organic buckwheat galettes packed and topped with practically every ingredient imaginable. Satisfy a sweet tooth with indulgent varieties like banana split, Oreo cookie and the "I'll Have What She's Having" or go savoury with ham and cheddar, smoked salmon and cream cheese or the show-stopping Avocado Superveg. Plenty of vegan-friendly crepes and galettes are offered and there's some seriously tempting breakfast crepes to pair with their Fairtade, organic coffee too.

Blake’s, Grey Street

Rightly renowned for their buzzy, busy and cosy cafe, Blake's popular breakfast menu features all kinds of treats but we're here for their delicious American-style pancake stacks. Served topped with a hearty drizzle of maple syrup, guests can choose to add blueberries or crispy streaky bacon - which will you go for?

Creams, Grainger Street

Dessert parlour Creams has an extensive menu which will please anyone with a sweet tooth. For Shrove Tuesday, opt for their light and fluffy crepes which come in a variety of flavours - from The Classic (with a choice of butter, icing sugar and lemon juice or good old maple syrup) to The Royale (with  Ferrero Rocher gelato, milk chocolate sauce, chopped nuts and Ferrero Rocher pieces). They serve a number of "hot pockets" too - hot crepe parcels available in sweet flavours like banoffee and Black Forest and savoury varieties including spicy sriracha chicken and falafel chipotle.

Or You Could Make Them At Home…

If all those pancake-y treats have you completely addicted, why not try making your own at home? It’s easier than you might think – even the flipping part isn’t that tricky – and you really don’t need much equipment. If you do find yourself short of the right whisk or non-stick pancake pan (that bit IS important) or a decent lemon squeezer, then a trip to John Lewis, M&S or Fenwick will get you everything you need.

And if you want to make perfect pancakes you need a foolproof recipe: this one from Julien Poulalion of La Petite Crêperie fame is a tried-and-tested favourite!

Shrove Tuesday may only come around once every year, but there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy delicious pancakes all year round in Newcastle whether you're dining out or flipping your own at home!
