12 Great Dog-Friendly Venues In Newcastle
There's no need to leave your-four-legged friend at home
Everybody loves dogs, right? Their goofy loyalty and lovable slobberiness? Around a third of UK households have a hound and more and more public places are inviting them in.
Newcastle is no exception, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes rolling out the red carpet for corgis and saying "aloha" to alsatians. Here are a few dog-friendly venues in the city where you can hang out with your best four-legged friend.
City Tavern, Northumberland Road
Pubs and dogs belong together. It’s just a fact. And the City Tavern fully embraces that. Not only does the pub have a rotating cast of resident dogs (they get their own gallery on the website, Rupert looks like a really good boy!) but they invite you to bring yours along and even offer a menu of specialist, gourmet dog treats for pooches to chow down on while their humans enjoy a pint or two.
The Bridge Tavern, Akenside Hill
A commanding presence in its pivotal location under the Tyne Bridge, the Bridge Tavern is also keen to invite your dog in, and probably won’t take offence if something taken from one of the dishes on their much-lauded menu just happens to slip under the table.
The Town Mouse Alehouse, St Mary’s Place
Downstairs from The Five Swans, The Town Mouse Ale House is not just an acclaimed micro-pub, it’s a dog-friendly acclaimed micropub. So your dog can watch you sample a really excellent range of beers, ciders, perries and more, and they provide free biscuits and a water bowl too.
The Head Of Steam Quayside, Broad Chare
This quayside outlet of the burgeoning pub chain adds dog-friendliness to its rightly well-regarded selection of craft beer, good food and bar games. There's always at least a pupper or two chilling with their owner in the pub's cosy, welcoming surrounds.
Wylam Brewery, Exhibition Park
What could be better than taking your dog for a Sunday afternoon walk around the lovely Exhibition Park and ending up at the magnificent Palace Of Arts for a pint or two of craft ale at Wylam Brewery? There’s often something going on and there’s plenty of space for the dog to snuffle about while you sup.
Lola Jeans, Market Street
Lola Jeans manages to be both a brilliant location for food, cocktails and a good-time atmosphere, as well as a friendly locale for you to hang out with your hound. Dogs are welcome all day and night, and there are water bowls and biscuits too.
The Redhouse, Sandhill
If you fancy taking your dog along for company while you get stuck into an excellent pie and ale menu, get yourself to The Redhouse. With cosy corners and comfy seats, it's the perfect spot to snuggle up with your hound.
Twenty Twenty, Bigg Market
The team at Twenty Twenty aren’t just big on pizza, they’re big on pups too. Dogs are welcome all day every day, but their monthly Dogs & Dough events are an extra-special treat for pooches and owners alike with socialising for guests of the four-legged variety and pizza and cocktails for the humans.
Tiny Tiny, Carliol Square
There are plenty of cafes happy to welcome our hounds too. Tiny Tiny is one, so you can enjoy their brilliant coffee and delicious and inventive breakfasts without leaving your dog at home.
Caffé 1901, Manors
This is the third location in the 1901 mini-chain, and not only do they welcome dogs inside and out but also offer free dog biscuits and a water bowl so the hounds don’t feel left out while you’re enjoying one of their tempting breakfasts, brunches or lunches.
The Forth, Pink Lane
Pink Lane pub The Forth became dog-friendly in 2015 and hasn’t looked back, welcoming a constant stream of pups and their owners since. There’s water bowls for thirsty pooches and free treats, and they even provide blankets for snuggling.
Dog & Scone, Pudding Chare
And finally, if you’re not lucky enough not to have a dog of your own, you need to visit Dog & Scone. Based on the cat cafes that originated in Taiwan and then spread to Japan about 25 years ago, Dog & Scone lets you hang out with a posse of carefully chosen canines while taking advantage of the simple but tasty café menu. 55-minute sessions in the café cost £6pp.
That’s just a handful of places we’d recommend for taking your dog if you fancy a pint, a bite or a break on a strenuous walk around the city. So grab the lead, don't forget the little plastic bags, and off you and your four-legged friend go.
