Over the last few years, coffee has become a serious business – perhaps these days you prefer a Nitro Cold Brew or aeropress or maybe you’re concerned about sustainability?

Well, Newcastle is chock-full of excellent coffee shops and cafés, from specialist spots to cosy hangouts. So, here’s a places you might want to swing by for a top-class cuppa.

Tiny Tiny Tiny Tiny

Tiny Tiny, Carliol Square

Those clued up on their Columbian coffee roasters, French presses and artisanal coffee grinders should make the pilgrimage over to Tiny Tiny on Carliol Square. A beautiful independent business, Tiny Tiny opened up in 2010 as Flat Caps and immediately started notching up awards - they were named Coffee Shop of the Year by Big 7 Travel and voted the Best Coffee Shop in the North East by the Best English Independent Retail Awards! They serve up the basics - a wonderful flat white and their lattes are lush - but true connoisseurs know that Tiny Tiny is the place to try rich cortados and nitro cold brews. They offer a wonderful range of brunch and snack options too (try the Turkish eggs) and it’s an all-round fantastic location to spend time hanging out.

Pumphrey's, Grainger Market

Pumphrey's is a key player in NE1’s flourishing coffee scene, even offering barista workshops for all those budding coffee connoisseurs out there. Did you know that the first iteration of Pumphrey’s was originally established by a tea purveyor named Leigh Smith who set up the business in the Flesh Market in 1750?! Pumphrey’s resides in a lovely stall nestled inside the Grainger Market, where they pride themselves on authenticity, bohemian vibes and - most importantly - incredibly delicious results.

Better yet, it's dog-friendly too.
