Shrove Tuesday will soon be upon us and there’s no better time of year to stuff your face with delicious pancakes.
In the spirit of all batter-based goodness, we’ve rounded up some of the tastiest places to grab a pancake or crêpe in Newcastle to help you celebrate.
The Dispensary, Heber Street
This quirky cafe absolutely excels at pancakes. Their menu is a dream to behold for lovers of soft, American-style pancakes, served in temping stacks with toppings like strawberry and Nutella, maple syrup, Lotus spread, and even jam and custard. They have regular seasonal specials too, so expect them to pull something amazing out of the bag for Shrove Tuesday.
Sweet Dreams Dessert Café, St Andrew’s Street
This delicious dessert restaurant will definitely satiate any pancake cravings you might have with several different varieties to choose from featuring inventive toppings like 'peanutella' banana, Aero mint and salted caramel. If you really want to embrace Shrove Tuesday, go for the VIP pancake - four warm, freshly made pancakes separately topped with Nutella and hazelnut pieces, Belgian chocolate and Kinder Bueno, Belgian chocolate with M&M's, and white Belgian chocolate with crushed Oreos.
Quay Ingredient, Queen Street
This quirky independent cafe is situated right underneath the Tyne Bridge, so it makes for a great pitstop while taking a Quayside stroll. Their pancake offering includes a classic lemon sugar option which the opportunity to add toppings like golden syrup, marshmallows and whipped cream. Gluten-free pancakes are served too and they'll be dishing out some great pancake deals on Shrove Tuesday itself.
Crêpeaffaire, Eldon Square
Specialising in flippin’ awesome pancakes, Eldon Square eatery Crêpeaffaire serves wheat flour crepes and gluten-free organic buckwheat galettes packed and topped with practically every ingredient imaginable. Satisfy a sweet tooth with indulgent varieties like banana split, Oreo cookie and Ferrero Rocher or go savoury with ham and cheddar, smoked salmon and cream cheese and avocado super-veg. Plenty of vegan-friendly crepes and galettes are offered too and there's some seriously tempting breakfast crepes like eggs benedict and maple bacon.
Blake’s, Grey Street
Rightly renowned for their buzzy, busy and cosy cafe, Blake's popular breakfast menu features all kinds of treats but we're here for their delicious American-style pancake stacks. Served topped with a hearty drizzle of maple syrup, guests can choose to add blueberries or crispy streaky bacon - which will you go for?
Creams, Grainger Street
Dessert parlour Creams has an extensive menu which will please anyone with a sweet tooth. For Shrove Tuesday, opt for their light and fluffy crepes which come in a variety of flavours - from the Royale (with Ferrero Rocher gelato, milk chocolate sauce, chopped nuts and Ferrero Rocher pieces) to the Chocolate Obsession (with hot chocolate cake, lashings of milk chocolate sauce, milk chocolate blossoms and chocolate chip gelato).
La Petite Crêperie, Quayside Market
The French-owned creperie really know their stuff, and although you’ll have to wait until the Sunday Quayside Market for your fill, La Petite Creperie’s creations are well worth waiting for. Vegan and gluten-free options are available, and their sweet and savoury crepes come topped with all manner of delights!
Horticulture, Market Lane
It's no secret that Horticulture boasts one of the best brunch menus in Newcastle and their American-style pancakes are understandably popular. They're available in two varieties - with Biscoff sauce, Biscoff crumb, white chocolate and caramel ice cream or berry compote, seasonal berries, yoghurt, maraschino cherry puree and granola - and can be made vegan upon request.
Crepes Gourmet, Quayside Market
Another popular Quayside Market crepe stall is Crepes Gourmet, who also tend to pop up at all sorts of events with their super-tasty crepe concoctions. There’s a fine selection of savoury crepes – Spanish, spicy popeye, cheese and ham and the rest – and of course a long list of sweet options too, from pistachio to white choco-berry to Oreo cookies.
The Alchemist, Eldon Square
Despite its well-deserved reputation as a particularly cool nightspot, The Alchemist does some pretty spectacular breakfasts, including a selection of pancakes. There’s two pancake stack options - the Maple Bacon (smoked bacon, fried eggs, maple syrup) and the Passionfruit (passionfruit, toffee crispies, lemon curd, burnt white chocolate, miso butterscotch, passionfruit cream). The latter is available as a dessert too and comes with its own suggested cocktail pairing.
Or You Could Make Them At Home…
If all those pancake-y treats have you completely addicted, why not try making your own at home? It’s easier than you might think – even the flipping part isn’t that tricky – and you really don’t need much equipment. If you do find yourself short of the right whisk or non-stick pancake pan (that bit IS important) or a decent lemon squeezer, then a trip to John Lewis, Lakeland or Fenwick will get you everything you need.
