Talk of the Tyne

The restoration of one world famous Tyneside structure will be the focus of a talk in another, next week (22 January).

On Wednesday 22 January, the Northumberland and Newcastle Society will host The Tyne Bridge - Restoring an Icon, at The Black Gate, Newcastle Castle.

And attendees will be able to hear about the unique challenges of the four-year restoration project – from protecting its kittiwake colony to the scale of the work involved.

Work began on the bridge in April 2024 with the aim of completing in summer 2028, ahead of the bridge’s centenary.

And speakers Cllr Marion Williams, whose portfolio is ‘Connected, Clean City’ and Pamela Holmes, Assistant Director of Transport for Newcastle City Council, will outline the sizeable task of restoring the structure, while managing traffic flow on a major gateway to the city used by up to 70,000 vehicles a day.

Tickets for the talk - which begins at 12.30 promptly, cost 15 (£10 for N&N members) and include refreshments.
