New 'Discovery Nights' After-Hours Events for Adults at Discovery Museum
Newcastle’s Discovery Museum is launching a new after-hours event for adults on Friday 22 November from 6-9pm called Discovery Nights. Tickets cost £8 and can be booked online [here https://discoverymuseum.org.uk/whats-on/discovery-nights ]
Each Discovery Nights event will have a different theme inspired by the museum programme and collections. The inaugural event takes inspiration from the current Steam to Green exhibition and the classic 1970s UK comedy ‘The Good Life’.
Kylea Little, Keeper of History at Discovery Museum, said: “We’re keen to open the museum at night to create a new community of adults who are seeking new experiences and to offer a fresh perspective on the familiar. Using the Steam to Green exhibition as inspiration we’re focusing on how to use eco-friendly options in everyday life.
“We called this first Discovery Nights event The Good Life, as we want to take the light touch on these practices and welcome people into an inviting, engaging space where people can try something new, browse with local traders and explore the museum after hours.”
With a spotlight on sustainable and slow living practice, the evening will consist of a variety of interactive activities, from behind-the-scenes tours of the costume store, mindful crafting, cosmetic making and browsing stalls from local, sustainably aware makers and retailers. People can learn about foraging, swap clothes and learn about repairing/ repurposing, see berry-powered solar demos, get up close to Tyne & Wear Archives material about ‘make do and mend’ and meet an experienced engineer in the Steam to Green exhibition to discuss all things green energy.
There will be a DJ, a bar provided by Newcastle University’s own micro-brewery Stu-Brew, and food and festive drinks available from the museum café.
Local traders engaging in sustainable practice and who will have stalls in the museum are Adorn Jewellery; Askew Candles; Delightfully Denim; For The Love Of The North; Hanging by a Fred; Hippy Hikers; Spinning Superiority Records; Tangent Photographic; saėėda and Vintage Revival.
The Steam to Green programme is Discovery Museum’s new two-year exhibition and event programme exploring the story of energy in the North East. Created in partnership with Newcastle University, Steam to Green’s headline sponsor is Vattenfall. With other sponsors Lumo, Tyne and Wear Metro and Northumbrian Water, the programme is also supported by Newcastle University, Faraday Challenge, Reece Foundation, The Headley Trust, Friends of Discovery Museum, and the Art Fund.
Discovery Museum is just a few minutes’ walk from Central Station in Newcastle. It is open weekdays 10am – 4pm and weekends 11am – 4pm and closed on Bank Holidays. It is always free entry, although donations are welcome.
