Deliveroo unveils North East expansion plans as it launches in Newcastle

Expansion into Newcastle signals Deliveroo’s first move into to the North East
Deliveroo, the on-demand delivery service for high-quality restaurant meals, has announced s its launch in Newcastle, its first city in the North East, hot on the heels of hugely successful Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool launches this year.
Launched in 2013 by William Shu and Greg Orlowski, Deliveroo is focused on providing the ultimate food delivery experience. Customers are able to order meals from a variety of leading local, independent and high-quality chain restaurants, conveniently delivered to their homes and offices in an average of 32 minutes. Restaurants can take advantage of Deliveroo’s proprietary end-to-end technology and logistics platform to offer delivery for the first time without the hassle of running their own fleet of drivers.
Deliveroo has seen its hyper-local approach to food delivery service thrive in areas with high population density and quality restaurants, making Newcastle an ideal new market for the service.
The launch means the hungry residents of the Toon can now get food from over 20 restaurants, including Handmade Burger Co. Carluccio’s and Thai Mantra, delivered to their door in 32 minutes for a £2.50 extra delivery fee. To order, all they need to do is type their postcode into Deliveroo’s website or iPhone app.
Caroline Hazlehurst, Regional Manager of Deliveroo North East, said: “Newcastle has a thriving food culture, yet busy consumers are missing the opportunity to have good food delivered from the best restaurants to their homes and offices. With the launch of Deliveroo, they will be able to enjoy quality food delivered quickly and consistently, whether it’s burgers, burritos or sushi.”
This expansion will create jobs for 40 drivers in Newcastle over the next year, and will bring significant increased revenues to partner restaurants - for example, many Manchester and Leeds partner restaurants have reported an increase of up to 30% in revenues.
Deliveroo has already seen impressive growth in the UK. Its loyal customer base has doubled since January, with the service adding over 50 restaurants this month in this region alone.
Hazlehurst continues: “This expansion into the North East is a significant step in our plan to become the best food delivery company in England. We’ve quickly established an enthusiastic base of repeat customers in our 22 towns and cities of operation in the UK, and we intend to and look forward to doing the same in Newcastle.”
