After the huge success of last year’s spectacular Quayside interactive light show, Laser Light City is back with a bang this year and will provide families and New Year revellers with a show to remember and even the chance to get involved too!
Organised by Newcastle City Council and NE1, an incredible audio and visual show will take place across three evenings – Friday 30th December, Saturday 31st December and Sunday 1st January – with over 80 lasers installed in and around the Quayside area, lighting up the iconic bridges and stunning surrounding buildings in a show that you can control!
Last year nearly 30,000 people participated in the laser spectacle, and it couldn’t be any easier to join in the fun. Just log on to the official website where you’ll have the choice of which lasers you’d like to manipulate. You’ll be entered into a queue and once it’s your turn you’ll be able to control the lasers mounted on the Tyne Bridge directly from your phone, sending light whizzing across the Quayside as the lasers are right at your fingertips. You’ll have a choice of colours and shapes to use, and you can move them around by tapping and dragging on your screen.
What’s even better about this year’s display is that organisers have introduced a special choreographed laser show from BAFTA award-winning artist Seb Lee-Delisle. On the hour, every hour you can be dazzled by the artist’s incredible skills and really see what the lasers can do! The shows will last around eight minutes and will be accompanied by an original music score composed by Seb himself.

The artist explains his inspiration behind Laser Light City: “I developed Laser Light City during a time when we had to keep our distance from others, and last year we found unity and fun as we played with lasers across the city. I’m delighted to take audiences and Laser Light City to the next level in Newcastle and offer an exciting audio visual laser show we can experience collectively from the banks of the Tyne.”
The interactive lasers are available to control from 5pm-11pm on Friday 30th, 5pm until 1am on New Year’s Eve, and 5pm-11pm on New Year’s Day, with special shows by Seb to enjoy on every hour. The best place to watch the show unfold will be along the Quayside, opposite HMS Calliope naval base, but the whole area will be alive with entertainment as roving street performers and food and drink options make the night one to remember!
Have you planned your New Year's celebrations yet? Why not head down to the Quayside on one of the three nights, or pop back a few times and really enjoy it! Perfect for all the family, and taking advantage of Newcastle's iconic Quayside, Laser Light City promises to deliver a truly wonderful New Year in NE1.
